Frankly Disappointed In Heath Ledger

The Australian born movie superstar Heath Ledger's untimely death disappoints me. As we know, he was recently discovered dead at his large $28,000 monthly Broome Street spacious loft right here in SoHo in Manhattan.

Heath's sudden vanishing act, at age 28, is clouded by truly mysterious circumstances thought to be related to drug overdose and even perhaps suicide. These matters are something we, as outsiders, may never know; they could well be related to the breakup Heath had recetly endured with his longtime girlfriend, Michelle Williams.

It is rumored that Heath had an array of legal prescription drugs at his disposal, ranging from popular sleeping pills to anti-depressants. In my opinon, if rumors prove true, the way Heath had handled these powerful mind altering drugs was unwise and reckless.

From what I understand, Heath was booted out of his large $3.5 million Boreum Hill brownstone house he had shared with Michelle due to an alleged increasing and intolerable drug problem that was exacebrating their relationship.

This is why I am disappointed. Heath was my all time favorite male actor. I will not enjoy any more new movies featuring him for the next 25 years. He may well be the next James Dean.

Heath had strong virtues, a positive energy and vivacious talent. He was daring and trendy, and so youthful as to have fooled all those around him into believing he was an average guy. Best of all, Heath and I share one passion: skateboarding.

I am 45 years old, and I skateboard still today. I find the thrill of skateboarding helps me to maintain my youthful vigor and passion, much like Heath did. The warm summer days I spend on my favorite longboard, blazing down the long winding asphalt hills of Prospect Park often reinvigorates within me, the zeal we are all known to have as youth, but oftentimes forget and leave behind.

I heard in the news that many stunned neighbors have said they saw him skateboarding on the street of Boreum Hill neighborhood in Brooklyn near his home. Heath was also known to frequent local scenes in his neighborhood.

I have seen several movies he had performed in. My favorite one, of course, is "The Lords of Dogtown" (2005), a movie about famous California skateboarding "Z boys" stars in the heyaday of the '70's and '80's. Heath's character was an original founder of Zephyer Skateboard who owned a small surf shop.

This film reflected my time as a teenager growing up in the suburb of Washington, D.C. skating carefreely on the hilly streets of South Arlington and grinding hard at a local now defunct skatepark on Wheeler Ave in Alexandria. As you can see, I have skated for over 30 years now and am never bored with it until the time I would be physically unable to continue so.

Casanova is one of my other favorite "chick film" I enjoyed immersely. Heath was very mischievous and dashing handsome guy messing around with many voluptorous beautiful ladies. I can see he was a hard working actor because he certainly was very good at acting. As an amazing womanizer in that movie remind me of Benjamin Franklin. My favorite American idol, Benjamin, was indeed a open secret womanizer of his time.

I have seen "The Patriot" though I don't remember what it was all about. That got me to think about collecting every movie Heath perfomed so masterfully in. I have compiled the list of those movies starring him.

There it is, my shopping list of Heath Ledger movies I have not seen yet, which I should buy eventually.

  1. "I'm Not There" (2007)
  2. "Candy" (2006)
  3. "The Brothers Grimm" (2005)
  4. "The Order" (2003)
  5. "Ned Kelly" (2003)
  6. "The Four Feathers" (2002)
  7. "A Knight's Tale" (2001)
  8. "Monster's Ball" (2001)
  9. "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999)
  10. "Two Hands" (1999)
  11. "Blackrock" (1997)

I already own one title, "The Lords of Dogtown" (2005) and have seen "Brokeback Mountain" (2005), "Casanova" (2005) and "The Patriot" (2000). I will definitely add those last three movies to my collection.

I am also looking forward to see upcoming premiere of a much acclaimed "Batman: The Dark Knight" (2008), featuring Heath Ledger, at a local movie theater this year. That one, I must not miss!

In that coming movie, "Batman: The Dark Knight", Heath played the murderous, crimiinally insane, psychotic comic book villian, The Joker. That same character was previously performed very well by my other favorite male movie superstar, Jack Nicholson.

Now that this Hollywood superstar, Heath Ledger, had departed from our world, still he will live on in every movie we would watch for years to come. Yes, I am disappointed but what can I do when it is beyond our control concerning his fate and destiny?

I cannot find it in me to presume to know what his life was like or what kind of pain he may have been in. I too quite enjoyed him as an actor and people often assume things about famous people or others in general that are unfair and less than empathetic.

On hearing of his death I read up some, since I don't generally follow celebrities lives and it seemed he had gone through a recent split up with the woman he loved, the mother of his child.

Far be it from me to judge him and if he erred in his actions, he has certainly paid the ultimate price for it.

My prayers are with him and the family and friends in his life who loved him.

Yes. My heart goes out to his family and friends, too. I was surprised after hearing about him at my work last Monday.

He passed away around 3:30pm, probably before, in a location approximately a quarter mile away from where I worked.

In fact, I wasn't even aware Heath had been living here right under my nose the whole time.

It's not that far and you can reach SoHo neighborhood on blue #A, #C and #E train to either Spring Street or W. 4th St stations  in  less than 10 minutes.

I heard he will be buried in Australia. I will miss him.

Thank you for your comments.

You know Christian Brando died too, yesterday, at 49. pneumonia. :(

I loved that man. He went to prison to protect his pregnant sister from an abusive mate. He earned my respect from across the ocean and having never met him. I mourn his death and the only good I can see in it is that his father passed first and was spared watching his son die at such a young age.

What!? Unbelievable! Marlon Brando's son, a strong, invincible unique personality, had succumbed to pneumonia? That's very bizarre because rumors in the news also alluded that Heath was sickened with pneumonia before he died. Thanks for this info. I got to read more about Christian on the 'net or something.

I also saw a very poorly written article about the death of Mr. Brando. It was almost entirely directed at Brando's past history and faults. I feel for his family in the face of media publications that are so callous. A man died. He will be missed. Ledger will also be missed, and I hope that his family will be left alone for quite some time after this loss.

yeah, that was what I read too. no thought given to the family and the reality of what had to be a very tortured man, who had a very difficult life.

agree with your wishes for the family, I hope both rest in peace and I believe that they will.

Too much early death. I am sad. But I also hope they are in a better place. I am still sad they are gone from us.

I was struck by one interview of Mr. Ledger in which he said he could die now because he knew he would live on in his daughter, even though he would want to be around her whole life as well. I have found in my work that for some patients, sometimes the bodies follow the words that they speak, whether that be wellness or death.

I saw an article (I can't remember where, maybe the L.A. Times?) the other day on all of the "celebrity" tragedy of late. They were comparing the men to the women, the women seem to all be getting pregnant out of wedlock, and the men are dying. Heath Ledger, Christian Brando and another actor (not super famous) named Brad Renfrow all died within a week of each other. So tragic...

Very sad, indeed, but there are far too many less famous people that go thru this everyday, as well, and we never hear about it....prescriptions drugs are real killers. I have a friend, 32 yrs old, that was recently found dead at her home from an overdose....the doctor who prescribed the drugs for her knew she was a recovering addict and alcoholic and presribed a huge presription of methodone and vicodin to her, amonst other drugs....She had 80 times the lethal dose of methodone in her body when she died....not to mention the overdose of the Vicodin and other stuff....anyways, doctors like that should be shot, in my opinion.
