Having a baby is not only a wonderful thing, but it certainly can be expensive. Our little boy is now 4 years old, but during the first few years it became very costly having to purchase formula, diapers, baby wipes, baby shampoos, baby bath, and any other baby related item such as bottle liners, sippy cups, and more.

All those baby items are very costly and given our problem with our economy, many mothers and fathers are looking for ways to cut down on these costs.

I am going to explain my obsession that I had back then with couponing, asking for samples, writing to the diaper manufacturer's with ideas or even problems.

Getting the Free Samples

One of the first things I did once we decided we were going to formula feed is go to the major formula manufacturer websites and fill out their contact forms.

Baby Formulas:

The first website I went to was Enfamil. I found out that they have a program called Enfamil Family Beginnings program and when you register, you get some free gifts including full cans of their formulas sent to your door for your to try and "formula checks". These formula checks were a godsend. After signing up, the intial checks came and you could use them at the grocery store towards your formula purchase just as a check. They came in denominations of $10, $5, $3, and $1.00. As your baby got older, the check amounts coming in the mail got smaller, but at almost $20 per can, we used every single one of these checks. I had also come across some coupons at the grocery store and didn't realize until later that you could use both the manufacturer coupon and with the "check" (because one was a check and one was a coupon). Every so often I found those little blinking machines at the grocery store. It wasn't often, but it certainly did help.

The other formula we tried was Similac. I do remember that when signing up on their website, we did receive some free small cans of formula and did get the formula checks in the mail as well. Not sure if they're still sending the checks and sample formula, but they still have a signup form on their website which states that you will get tips and ideas for your baby.

The other formula we didnt even try is called Nestle Good Start. I remember signing up for this one as well and I remember getting those checks good for the Nestle Good Start formula in the mail. Upon checking their website today, it seems as maybe their offer has changed but you can still sign up to something called "Start Healthy, Stay Healthy Resource Center. You will receive money saving coupons, emails specific to the stage of your child's life, tips and articles, and much more.

(If you click on their "special offers" link, you can also print various gerber coupons as well.

Getting Some Baby Coupons

Well, I suppose that what I'm about to tell you will work for just about any manufacturer, but I only wrote to Kimberly-Clark Corporation regarding their Huggies brand diapers. What was happening was as you were about to pull the back tab to "velcro" it to the front of the diaper, it would just rip off. In a pack of 18, this was happening 2 or 3 times and these diapers are expensive. So, I broke out some pen and paper, found the address on the package, and wrote them a letter regarding their diapers and what was happening. I was pretty nice about it, just asked them if they could look into this to see if it was a defect, etc.

Well, some time after writing the letter, I received a letter back from them. Inside it had a coupon for a free package of diapers and a few extra high value dollar off coupons. I can't remember exactly the denomination of the coupons, but I believe they were $5.00 ones. This obviously made me very happy! We continued using the huggies diaper brand and found that the problem didn't happen as often after that. Not sure if they took my advice, or if that was just a problem on a certain size, but problem solved.

My point here is obviously not to blatantly lie about a problem, but to write to the manufacturers of products if there is something wrong or even if there is something good. I did write a few letters to a few other manufacturers praising their products and I received coupons in the mail from them as well.
