A baby shower is a party in which expectant parents receive gifts for their expected or born child. - Proper Baby Shower Etiquette
The rules of baby shower etiquette are changing and being bent, but there are certainly some rules that you should still abide by
It is tradition to play some baby shower games at a baby shower. That way we are able to make fools of ourselves and everyone gets a good laugh. Though I'm not much of a game player, I had wanted a few games to be played. Though not too many so that the guests would become antsy.
Since I was planning for years to have a baby, I used that time to compile my favorite games from the baby showers that I have attended. When the guests walked in the door, we had a table set up with the items that were needed for the games to be played. The guests also took a name tag and put it on.
#1 = There was a basket filled with baby diapers made from a tissue and held together with a tiny saftey pin. Everyone attatched a diaper to their name tag. Later on, when the games started, you would tell everyone to open their diaper. Whoever had a DIRTY diaper won a prize. The dirty part was made with a little bit of a chewed up Tootsie Roll.
#2 = There was a basket filled with necklaces. The necklaces were made with a plastic blue or pink pacifier, and it was strung on a ribbon. Everyone took a necklace as they came in and put it on. From that point, you were not allowed to say BABY. If someone caught you saying BABY, you had to give up a necklace to them. The person with the most necklaces at the end of the shower won a prize.
#3 = When everyone came in, they were instructed to write down a number. They would keep the paper for a little later. When we started to play the games I told the guests that no one had better picked a number over 170! I asked if anyone picked 165. The number they are trying to come closest to is how much you weigh. The one closest gets a prize. You can also do this with using the number of pounds gained so far while pregnant.
#4 = On the same paper the guests wrote a number, they would draw a line to split the paper into two sides. On one side they would have the number for Game #3 and on the other side they would make a list of numbers 1-8. We had set out baby food jars without the wrappers on. They would look at all the baby food jars and guess what was in them. No tasting! The one with the most correct won a prize.
#5 = You pass around some rolls of toilet paper. Everyone takes some. Everyone would get a chance to come up to the mom-to-be and see if their toilet paper made it around the biggest part of her belly, without going over. The closest person would win a prize.
#6 = You have a bowl filled with uncooked rice and some safety pins. Guest is blindfolded. With one hand, they have to get as many safety pins out of the rice as they can. You would think this was easy; but it is really hard! The guest with the most safety pins wins a prize.
I found that these baby shower games were the most fun, were relatively quick and took the least amount of preparation. With the exception of the tissue diapers. I had my aunt make them!
