Free Google Earth vs Google Earth Pro

So after talking to my husband I must write another hub about free Google Earth  vs Google Earth Pro (also known as Google Earth Plus).  He is the dispatcher of the family so he sees a lot of advantages to Pro that I being the cheap skate in the family often disagree with.  But for $20, it really isn't that much to spend for the difference if it is something that you will be using a lot like he does.  So let's take a moment and do a quick review of the main points that come up when considering if you really want to part with your hard earned money.

Lets start with the things that are the same:  The Google Earth Map satellite imagery database, ability to fly to anywhere on the planet, or explore space, ability to search for schools, parks, restaurants, or hotels, getting driving directions, you can search featured content, rotate and tilt the view in 3D.  Both also have the same drawing tools, and offer website support.

At this point we will go to the points where they deviate.  The size of printing and saving images is 3800 pixels difference.  Google Earth Free offers 1000 pixels and pro offers 4800 pixels.  If you download Google Earth Pro version it has an additional add on feature where you can import GPS data (it is a read only format though so make sure you have your route correct prior to leaving the house!).  It also allows Real-time GPS tracking (these things are going to put private detectives out of business aren't they!).

You can also import data from a spreadsheet if you have the pro version.  I will admit for my husband this point alone makes it worth the cost.  When routing out work or drivers it is SO much easier to use Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet of the locations that need to be visited.  This is not an important feature if you plan to use it for single visits but he is routing 40-50 stops per driver per day.  This version allows for 2500 points to be imported.

Some other options that are available with the paid version is optional ads (so you can turn them off if you want), support via email and phone as well as he web, the ability to measure area, movie making capabilities, and GIS data importing.

Yet another add on feature is the ability for GDT traffic counts data.  GDT traffic counts are taken by the government at major traffic points through out the US.  These are useful when routing and determine the fastest way to route which is key for a dispatcher.

Personally I like the Google Earth zoom.  I continue to be enthralled with the ability to go anywhere in the world without ever leaving my couch.  Google Earth Australia seems to be where I go the most.  Something about that continent just seems so different from what is here in the US.  I have been through deserts and lived in mountains, but to be able to soar above the Earth and swoop down like an eagle to ground level absolutely enthralls me.  I can spend hours just looking at the free Google Earth download that we have here at the house.  For my husband the Pro version is required for him to effectively do his job, no matter which one you chose I am sure you will be fascinated by its capabilities.
