There are many reasons why parents decided to home school their children. Do the children have special needs? Are they being bullied? Perhaps it is difficult taking them to and from school because of your work schedule. Whatever the reason may be home schooling your children is a big responsibility that needs plenty of forethought. Once the decision has been made you will need to prepare. How, you may ask does one start this process? Is there such a thing as free homeschooling or does one have to pay extraordinary amounts of money?

The simple truth is that you will have to spend some amount of money to home school your children. It may be a small amount but something none the less. Remember that when your children were going to regular school you still had to buy school supplies, clothing, and provide money for lunch. Now that you will home schooling you will actually be saving money.

Because the Independent School District is awarded funds for each child that attends school it will be very difficult to get assistance from them. They won’t provide you with the materials necessary to home school your children. When you are ready to remove your kids from school you’ll have to fill out forms with your schools administrative department. These withdrawal forms indicate that you will be responsible for educating your child from home.

The next step is to create or purchase a curriculum for each child’s grade level. You can easily find these online. Books are a different matter. Your local bookstore should carry books for every grade level such as “Everything a Fifth Grader Should Know.” There are web-sites that help with free homeschooling by providing printable worksheets for all grade levels and subjects. Once you have the curriculum, supplies will be needed. Since your children will be turning papers in to you, using recycled paper is perfect. Don’t throw that junk mail away! A schedule will need to be created and followed so that expectations are clearly defined.

Now that you have a quite study area, materials and children at home you may ask yourself what are the benefits of home schooling? The first and most important benefit is that they are safe and with you. What are the drawbacks? Well, your children may miss out on the social interaction they develop on a daily basis. This can be over-rated and those skill can be learned when they are older. A way to overcome this hurdle is by joining a Home Schooling Association in your local area which allows you to meet other parents and share tips. Your children will be able to play with their children and build strong, long lasting friendships.

Is there such a thing as free homeschooling? Unfortunately the answer is no. Home schooling your children will cost you something whether its money, time and the most important – energy. Remember that you will be taking on the role of teacher and tutor. Don’t make the mistake of letting your children teach themselves. Simply giving them a book, telling them to read it and answer the questions isn’t giving them an education.
