If your are involved in business dealings, the chances are that you will need legal forms. Legal forms are documents that allow you to fill in a few blanks to make an agreement in writing.

While you could write your own legal documents there is a good chance that you might forget some key element that should be addressed. Another alternative is to hire an attorney to prepare these documents, but for many small business transactions, the transaction does not seem worth the expense.

A quick search online will bring up hundreds of websites that offer legal forms. Many of these websites offer free legal forms while others will want you to pay a fee to download their forms. Of the top sites you can commonly find business and personal form letters to address your individual needs. These form letters can be real helpful, as they save you the time required to draw up necessary letters.

What to Look For

If you decide to use free legal forms, you may want to look at the same type of form offered on several websites. Download copies of three or four forms and read the wording. You may find that one or more addresses a specific issue that is of interest to you. Many of the top sites allow you to make personal changes or adjustments to their legal documents. You may find that you want to utilize info from multiple forms on one. You can make these changes when applicable to your unique needs.

If none of the free forms seems to quite fit your situation, you may need to look at the legal forms pay sites. Some of these sites will allow you to preview forms without having to pay until you actually download the form for printing. This allows you the option of seeing if the form you are going to buy is better than the one you could get for free. You can also buy legal forms as a package. These packages offer a number of helpful legal and business forms at relatively reasonably priced.

Some of the better websites for legal forms will allow you to download the form into a word or PDF document format. This will allow you to fill in names and other pertinent information in on your word processor without having to dust off your old IBM Selectric to fill in the blanks. This also allows you to make addendum's to the form, and is an absolute must.

While legal forms can be printed on almost any printer, ink from forms printed on a laser printer will not run if the document happens to get wet. If the document is going to be a recorded document, then it should be printed in black ink. You may also need to add a space for a notary public or signature guarantee's for document signatures.

Copies should be made for all parties involved in the transaction. If the document is a loan, the original document should go to the lien holder and the other party should receive the copy. For deeds, the deed goes to the property buyer.

Legal documents are for your protection and detail the terms of the agreement. No matter what was agreed to verbally, if it is not in the legal document, it will not be legally binding. Be sure that every agreement is include in the document for your protection.

Once the document is signed and/or recorded, be sure to keep it in a safe place. You may want to purchase a fireproof box for this type of paperwork. Another choice is to rent a safety deposit box from your bank. Yes, banks still offer these, believe it or not! You could keep the original in the safety deposit box and a working copy in your home office for easy referral.
