If you have just created a new website, chances are it is ranked by Google with a PR of 0. Unless you’ve found a niche that has little to non-existent competition (a hard task, these days!) then you’re going to be lacking good quality organic traffic. In fact, you might not be able to get any visitors, whatsoever to your site through search engines with such a low PR.

I once got a quote for link building for a few sites from Guru.com and received quotes anywhere from $80-$250 per site. I don’t have that kind of money to spend on results that aren’t even guaranteed! You can do it for free. It takes a little time and effort, but the results will pay off.

This article will cover some Free Link Building for SEO tips that I use in order to increase the Google Page Rank (PR) of my sites.

"...if you want something done right, do it yourself..."

Don’t Pay for Link Building or Link Building Advice!

You should never pay for link building services or link building SEO advice because if you want something done right, you need to do it yourself. Imagine outsourcing a project to build 30 backlinks, paying $100 and having your site de-indexed from Google. It can easily happen to you, so the best option for beginners is to build backlinks yourself. One by one!

There are also lots of link building programs out there, but if you truly do your research and don’t take a lazy approach, you can find everything you need. I have been doing lots of SEO research, keyword research and PR research over the last few months and truly feel that I’ve learned more information than someone who shells out $200 for a ‘course’. By gathering my own information, I’m bound to remember it better and therefore have better results in my link building strategy!

Free Link Building for Your Website!

The fastest and easiest way that I have found to boost PR for a new site is to write articles. Wait, I thought you said this would be easy! Anyone can write articles, it is not that hard! By the time you’ve written an intro paragraph, 5-10 sentences in between and a closing paragraph that features your links, you’re done!

Posting your website’s link on ‘link farms’ or site directories really doesn’t work that good anymore. In fact, I never do it. The folks at Google are constantly upgrading their algorithms and I’m quite confident that backlinks from certain site directories can actually produce adverse results.

The other option for link building would be to link from already existing websites that you own that have a higher PR.

If you’re just starting out, writing articles with your site’s hyperlink will be much more beneficial to increasing your site’s page rank!

Why Article Writing for SEO Backlinks?

If you choose article directories that have high page ranks, these sites typically index new articles very quickly, usually within 6-12 hours. High PR on articles from certain article websites usually ranges from 3 PR – 4 PR – without any promotion! Simply write an article and link your site with an anchored backlink with your main keywords. (If you don’t know what this means, do some google searches to teach yourself – again, self-taught SEO techniques are much more beneficial then paying lots of money to have someone tell you tips that you can easily discover for free.

Article Writing Websites to Increase Your PR

My favorite choice is HubPages.com. Most of my articles here on HubPages are ranked PR 2-4. They have the ability to give my other websites a good, quick boost when needed. The other cool thing about HubPages is that you can share impressions with the site and earn money via Adsense. This allows you to earn money as well as build backlinks for your other money making or affiliate sites – a pretty sweet deal!

You can sign up for HubPages here (will open up in a new window).

The other article site that I use is E-Zine Articles.

There are plenty other article sites out there, but I have found that these two work best in terms of increasing your PR through backlinks.

Tips for Link Building

  • A good strategy is to write one article and then re-write it with different words so it doesn’t appear as a duplicate and post it on another article website. This is a very quick and proven link building strategy that works wonders! I write two different for articles for each site that I want to promote and post a unique one on each article site with a link to my webpage in the footer. (Just make sure the articles are relevant to your niche topic!)
  • Never create more then one or two backlinks everyday, especially for a new site! I personally wouldn’t create more than 5 backlinks for a new site in one month as this might cause you to be sandboxed by Google.
  • It’s a waste of your time to create more than one or two backlinks from each article website. The more you have will help, but it'd be much more beneficial to publish articles on other article sites. The more diverse the domains are of your backlinks, the better results you'll receive.
  • Stay away from link farms – Google doesn’t put much value into them anymore, for obvious reasons.
  • Link your new websites with all of your other websites to help increase PR.
  • By writing two articles with your website’s link strategically anchored with relevant keywords in the footer, you’ll be able to help increase the PR of your site in no time with this free link building strategy for SEO!

Okay, you confirm my beliefs but it also leaves with me with some questions - and tests I want to do. Certainly Hubpages and eZineArticles are great places. I've used them with clients. But of your Hubs, how many have backlinks to your articles? Does a website need 100 or more backlinks to make it really effective? (I personally don't think it does need that many.) I would also suggest finding other good blogs to comment on where you can leave a URL . . . but, truly, truly participate in a conversation and perhaps use the same few blogs that are relevant to your industry.

I'm feeling more confident about my own SEO skills than ever and I'm glad you validated some of my own thinking.

Sheesh, I just about wrote a Hub on the subject myself!

Hi Don, thanks for stopping by! I only go for niches that don't need a lot of backlinks to succeed. I couldn't imagine building 100 backlinks. But some do! The more competitive your niche, the more backlinks you'll need. Therefore, I stay away from super competitive niches! Typically 5-15 quality articles and a few various backlinks gives me the results I am looking for.

Blogs that are relevant are also a great way to build free SEO links as long as you leave a relevant comment that the author will want to approve.

Do you find that this strategy is enough to get you to the topsot on Google - No 1 page 1 ? Or is it enough to get you just to the first page of Google ?

It all depends on your niche and the competition. Sometimes I rank #1, but I almost always get on the first page with the niches that I pick. I aim for low competition ones. I know I can't get on the front page for say, Mortgage Loans, that's un-realistic!

How about the niche of "business." Just kidding! A thought for readers: Hub pages is a good place to test niche ideas via articles. I did an article writing SEO project for a client who owns apartments and I succeeded on about 10 articles and several relevant blog posts. Again, thanks for confirming that only doing about 5 - 10 articles may be all that's needed. That's also a good way to position an article writing service.

Hey, your Hub made me think of the name of my blog. My url is different than the title. Then I thought of a specific phrase to name the title and url the same. I entered the phrase into Google and my blog came up number 2 out of 45,000,000 results. I'm going to change the title and url right now so they're consistent!

Great! A good rule of thumb is to always choose relevant keywords in your URL and in your title. Google appreciates it! :D

Nice hub. How do I get a new website I designed for someone using SiteDelux to generate more traffic? I am limited to 200 characters for Description and Keyword Meta Tags. There are SO many other websites for the same subject.

I'm not familiar with SiteDelux but if it is a highly competitive subject, there may not be much that you can do. Just stick to relevant keywords.

What you can try is to use the google.com/keywords tool. Enter in the main keyword of your topic. Look for other keywords that are related, but might have less competition. If you find a keyword phrase that doesn't have a lot of competition then you might want to use that instead of your original keyword.

You've come a long way grasshopper...lol Really, it's a good article and good advice. You're right, posting tons of articles with backlinks coming from one domain is not going to give you much PR juice. Posting a few articles to a handful of different domains will give you the juice. Same with posting comments on blogs, if you only choose blogs from, say blogger.com then they're not going to amount to much. Finding blogs that are self hosted and relevant will help a bit more.

I'm with you on the self teaching thing too. Researching SEO, almost since I started on HP, has led me to develop a few websites of my own, one of them is specifically geared for my fellow hubbers in getting PR for their hubs and other articles. It's still a month or 2 from launch and I'll definately be writing a few hubs about it soon.

By the way, I'm really glad you are doing well here. All this writing and researching you are doing is really going to pay off when you get to law school.

I sometimes offer to do guest posts on other blogs. Many will allow you to place a link at the end of your post back to your site. This spreads my backlinks around even more.

Good hub - after 6 months I just found out the point you made about links from the same ISP. Writing 100 articles for ezinearticles for the same sites link is really equal to 1 backlink. Spreading to other article directories is the trick, good ones.
