Research shows that the love of reading begins at home. Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Therefore, parents should take an active role in helping their young children become successful readers.
These 5 skills will help children become successful readers:

It is important to set a time to read with your children. Make it a fun and special time so that your children will enjoy learning. Parents are their children's most important role model. Let your children see you reading books or newspapers to let them see how important reading is to you.

Very helpful! I've found that with some kids, especially those who are 'reluctant readers', tend to respond very well to interactive software and books because of the feedback and animation. LIke you said, the key thing is finding what kids like to read and then 'feeding' that interest.

Thanks for posting these links. It's so important for children to get a good start with reading, because it really is the key to effective learning. Both my children have been reluctant readers, so the challenge for me has been to find reading matter that they're interested in. In my daughter's case it's magazines, and in my son's case it's factual information, usually about science and space. It's often just a matter of persevering without wearing out their interest!
