As this eminent literary laureate puts it," Freedom" is an internal affair, so it is personal and relative. It means the liberty to think, to dream, to choose and to act. In his remarkable book,' The Seven Habits of Highly effective people', Stephen covey has expounded that independence is the paradigm of I-I can do it, I am responsible, I am self-reliant, I can choose. So, freedom, in its true sense, varies from individual, as it is an internal power to exercise your options.
"Equality", on the other hand, is not internal, it is external rather circumstantial. Equality, in the context of our rights and duties, is bestowed on us by virtue of our birth itself. Beyond this dimension, equality has an element of constraint, of imposition, say, all people will behave alike, act alike, work alike and so on. When such a conditioning is there i.e. where there is no choice but a restriction, there" Can't be freedom" So, the difference between day and night. When one is there, the other can't be. Thus, free people are not equal and equal people are not free.
A simple example will clarify the idea. The birds in a cage are "made equal" because all of them are put under the same condition. They are not free. But, once they are let off, they soar towards different directions and to different heights. Now they are free as they have exercised their choice and they are certainly not equal. So, freedom is lifting above the ordinary plane of commonality. Equality is not natural because we all have different circumstances, dreams, thoughts, preferences, aims, aspirations, opportunities, etc. Not only we have different stimuli and so different responses but we may respond differently to the same stimulus because of the range of options of which we make a choice. We sow different thoughts and reap different actions and finally attain different destinies. But when we are asked to sow the same, we reap similar things and we do not move out of our shell because we are not free. So, equality can only be superimposed like in case of communism where we have the state to control us, to define, use us and manipulate us. On another extreme is capitalism which empowers us to act rather than be acted upon. In such a system, people are free to make move, so they are not equal and that's why this society is divided into HAVEs and HAVE NOTs. In this situation, a person is what he makes himself. The concept of freedom is aptly described by Henley as "I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul." People who are equal are subject to similar influence while people, who are free, are liberated of all influences. So both types can't go congruently. Freedom gives us identity, self awareness, power of imagination and the ability to create in our minds beyond what others think and fulfilling our unique potential, which perhaps, equality cannot give. Thus where equality binds us in a common string, freedom allows us to scatter anywhere we like or we choose.
