Free Security Programs For Microsoft Windows
63If you have just installed a fresh copy of a Microsoft operating system, either Windows XP or Windows Vista, be sure to install the basic protection your PC needs before opening your Internet Explorer and start surfing the internet.
Yes, you need to install a bunch of updates and a couple of security softwares to properly protect your computer. Even a newly released version of Microsoft Windows needs security updates and patches.
The internet is full bad guys looking for unprotected computers and take advantage of this situation. Simply visiting their websites will infect your computer with malwares, spywares, trojan horses, and all sort of viruses lurking in the internet.

Microsoft Windows Update - This is a must and the first thing to install before browsing the internet. Enable your computer's automatic updates and it will start downloading security patches from Microsoft website. When the patches and security updates have been downloaded, a message will display on the lower right portion of your screen indicating you are ready to install the updates.
CTUpdate - Offline Windows Update - Use this utility program if you are installing Windows on multiple computers and don't want to download the windows update multiple times, or if you are installing Windows on a computer that has no internet-connectivity for the mean time, or if you simply have the habit of messing up and re-installing Windows.
AVG Free - This is a free anti-virus and anti-spyware protection for Windows for private and non-commercial use. This will be your first line of defense again any malicious programs and viruses. If you want additional features that it offers, you may later upgrade to a paid subscription.
Spybot Search & Destroy - This is a free anti-spyware/anti-malware program that you can use to immunize your PC. This program maintains a database of known spyware/malware sites and prevents your internet browser from connecting to those sites. It also includes several troubleshooting tools and utilities.
Spywareblaster - Another free anti-spyware/anti-malware program that you can install to compliment Spybot Search & Destroy.

You may wonder why I decided to write a hub about worst antispyware programs, while so many people look for best antispyware of all the time and nothing else. This idea came to my mind when I happened to get my hands on a software promoted with much hype. It performed so poorly and left me so frustrated that I felt it necessary to share my experience. But then I thought: there's a bunch more similarly badly coded applications which claim to remove everything at ease but actually do nothing. Read more...
