One of the best words in the English language

No Money Down

Family fun doesn't have to break the bank!  Family fun can be had for very little, or no money at all!  Money is tight these days, especially for people with families.  There is never enough money to go around, and that doesn't leave anything after all the bills have been paid to do anything fun with your family.  Or does it?  There are a lot of options out there for fun activities for a family on a tight budget!

Hit The Trails

Head outside.  Yes, I said outside!  That place you go when you head to your car to go somewhere, with all the trees and sunshine.  Yep, that's the place.  Go there.

If all the members of your family have bikes, head out to a bike path, and take a nice. leisurely bike ride.  Make a day of it!  A lot of bike paths have places you can stop along the way, things to do in the towns you bike through, shops to look at, and that sort of thing.  Window shop, see some things you may not have seen before, and enjoy the outdoors.  Pack along a lunch in a backpack, or strapped to a rack on your bike.  Younger children can relax in a variety of ways, from the seats that attach behind your seat on the bike, to the little trailers that attach to the back of the bike.  A bike ride is a great way to spend time together as a family without spending any money.

If you are short on bikes, head to a state park, or nature preserve and do some hiking.  A lot of parks offer walking and hiking trails at different levels of difficulty, to accommodate a larger number of people.  An easy, relatively short trail might be better for a family with smaller children, while a more challenging, longer hike would be more suited to a family with older children.  Again, pack a lunch, enjoy the fresh air, and natural surroundings, and have fun.  Bring along a football, or other things to give you something to do when you stop.  Take a camera with you, so that you are able to capture the beauty of nature.

Life's A Beach

Do you live near a lake?  Or maybe the ocean?  You have a built in fun activity that costs you nothing!!!  Unless you live in the desert, you more than likely have a body of water somewhere near you.  Even when I lived in the desert, I still have a lake about an hour away.  Take advantage of nature!  Hit the beach!!

Some places charge you money to use their beach, so avoid those places.  Most beaches are at your disposal free of charge.  Other beaches are only available to people who live in the communities surrounding it, so make sure you have access to the beach before you use it.

Pack a lunch, some towels, sunscreen and all that other stuff.  Don't forget tools for sandcastle building for the younger kids.  My daughter loves playing in the sand.  Her shoes and pockets have been proof of this since she was about one.  A day of sun, swimming and sand can be just the sort of fun activity you are looking for.  And, it's all free!!  What more could you want?

Take in Some Culture

There are a lot of great museums in most cities, even some smaller cities, as well.  A lot of these museums offer one day of the week that is free of charge.  They ask for donations, but that is not mandatory.  Do a little research.  Check out websites, call some museums, and talk to people you know.  Find out what museums offer free days, what days they are, and what restrictions apply.

You could plan several activities around different museums and see a lot of great things, from timeless works of art, to dinosaurs, to wonders of science.

Fun At Home

Who says you have to leave the house to have fun with your family?  What about planning fun activities right at home!  Maybe you could do a game night.  I know, kids love that!  Younger kids really do, and you could even make it fun for older kids, as well.

We all have a stack of board games somewhere in our house, right?  But board games have changed with the times.  They are more advanced as technology advances.  Trivial Pursuit has DVD versions of the popular trivia game, and Scene It offers movie and television buffs a chance to shine.  There are still the classics, such as Life, Monopoly and kids games, like Shoots and Ladders and Candy Land.

You could even add video games into the mix.  I know.  Some parents don't like video games, while others play them as much, if not, more than the kids do.  Truth of the matter is, kids like video games, and family fun is supposed to be about having FUN, not doing something educational all the time.

So, every week, one member of the family gets to choose what game is played.  This way, everyone gets to do something they enjoy.

Hey there Anna Marie. I love this hub. Great tips and tips within tips. A camera is something I often forget and wish I hadn't. There's always a good natural photo op during all these activities, yes, even while playing monopoly (I've got 15 diferent kinds, so we never get bored of that one!) In St. Louis, our Art Museum and Zoo are free, so that's a plus for us.

Love your writing, as usual.

TM-- Thank you for stopping by!! As a kid, my family took us to all kinds of things, from the zoo, to state parks, and all kinds of other things. I know they didn't have a lot of money, so they made the most of what they had. I know that with times being tough for a lot of people, it can be very easy for that family fun to disappear, because people don't think they can afford to do anything.

FB-- I forgot the zoo!!! Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago is also free. I can't believe I forgot to include that! I used to have a few different versions of monopoly, but I ended up giving them away to a friend who collected them. She had at least 20, or something. I can see how the different versions could make the game more interesting! I hear you on the camera thing. There have been so many times that I just said to myself, I wish I had my camera!!

Great and timely suggestions that people need to be reminded about!  In my opinion, the best times are the free ones.  Here in Florida, my favorite would be to go to Seabastian Inlet for the day, fishing, hiking, swimming in the ocean and inlet, lots of wildlife to see.  Many local, county, and state parks are practically unused and hardly known.  Another fun day with kids is a made up scavenger hunt. Birding and cloud watching too.

Jerilee-- We are practically neighbors!!!! What a small world!!! I don't live all that far from Sebastian Inlet!!!! I have yet to go there, though. Waiting on the weather to be warm when we all have a day off to go!

Direxmd-- Thank you!! I love my parents for the experiences and good sense that they gave me!

Tuesdays were our game nights, and Monopoly classic/orginal was the game. I remeber one game my grown son then 25 yrs and my then 15yr old and I played of Monopoly my youngest son went totally broke lost his property and money.. I told him as long as I've been playing the game I've never seen anyone lose it all. We all laughed. And we still do when we talk about it. I miss those days. A lot.

Another good placed that I did this weekend with my granddaughters, Free concerts a concerta FullScore ensemble held at a local church the durning the summer there are free ones in the park. There is Jelly Belly Factory not far from me they give free tours.

And if you like bowling, though its not free, some bowling places have .99 cents games and comic bowling. Oh and bumper if you bowl like me, gutter balls.

I liked this hub please do more of this.

Fenique-- Sounds like you have a lot of good memories with your kids!!! We never had concerts near us, well, not free ones that you could bring the family to. That does sound like a lot of fun, though!!! We did go bowling a lot, though, and I still could use the bumpers!!! I will put together some more ideas for other Hubs like this! Thank you!!!
