An area code overlay is an alternative way of adding an area code to a zone. Just as geographic splits add new area codes to a place, this is also what area code overlays accomplish. They function by adding a new area code over top of the pre-existing area code, serving the exact same geographic area.

The advantage of area code overlays is that customers may maintain their existing area codes, and new customers receive the new area codes.

Overlays require all customers - including both the customers with the new area code and those with the old area code - to dial area codes (10-digits total) for local calls.
