In todays day and age the internet provides us with lots of information and free resources we sometimes have trouble keeping up,but what resources do you need when being online in the internet age?

Well it all depends on what you need and want to gain from working or playing on the internet, for instance if you just want to mess around and chat in the online world the a free account here and there with a popular social network like Myspace could be the thing your after.

But if you are after free online spaces and resources that benefit you. then what do you go for?, what do they do?

Social networks are popping up all the time as many people find it great to mix with people all over the world, they find that sharing interests and personal stories or insights online a great way of expressing themselves and meeting new people on the world wide web.

Creating an online presence is quite easy, all that is required is to set up your profile page that says who you are (or not if you feel like being private) and just share your hobbies and interests and what you want to do online or offline, this could be career wise or related to one or more of your interests, the more you write the more people could relate to you if they find you within the network.

Of course you can search for other like minded people on the social network yourself as this speeds up the process and you can form friendships based on a single interest or just because you are cool(yes cool is still cool to be cool!)

In the social networks you always have a blog, so you could write well informed blog posts on any topic you like, you decide, bore someone to death with your day at work or write a detailed description of your problem with piles, the sky's the limit with blogs, just make them interesting and you will have some good followers on the social networks that you choose.

Free web sites and hosts can host a basic site for you and quite often, this is the choice of many starting out with a web presence online, of course there are disadvantages of having free hosted web pages, but this is a free resource web page so I'll skip on the downsides for now.

Having free hosted web pages means that all you have to do is log into your account and provide the content on each page that you want to have, a simple website might have about 5 or 6 pages tops, with the home page being the top landing page with an explanation about your site, the other standard pages that are quite formulaic are:

• an about page which could add further information to compliment your home page.
• A contact page were anyone can contact you about your site.
• A faq page were you provide questions and answers based onwhat readers have asked or might ask.
• A forum, a place to debate and add interactvity to your site, this is a good move to have great conversations happen on your site and creates a sticking point forsome visitors too.
• Product page or some specific focused page devoted to your sites main topic, this page would probably get updated often, and you could archive the previous article/content, so really this could be a blog.

Free link directories are quite old in terms of relevancy and whether they actually help your websites rank, but in all honesty a backlink is a backlink so many people online still do this practice, but they find it quite daunting as a promotional method to sign up to many link directories and write a title and a unique description for each one.

But with many new link directories popping up all over the internet, why not take advantage of a free link in a directory? What have you got to lose? apart from not having your site accepted, but there is no harm in trying this, defeat is not an option in this online world of trying to get your websites seen.

Blog plug ins are intended to add more interactivity to your blogs, extras to make your blog more appealing to view and delve into more, the deeper your visitors go into your blog posts the better for you and your blog.

Related blog posts plug ins add that extra touch to your quality blog posts and are usually placed right at the end of your posts, this is a great plug in feature that provides your readers with somewhere else to go and stay on your blog.

Other plug ins allow lots of different features that you may find useful to promote your blogs or actually build a readership, a share this plug in is common on blogs as is the comment function which is now built in as standard, these all act as the interactive feature we take for granted on almost any blog platform.

Free domain names always get snapped up quite quickly, especialy as people prefer not to pay when first attempting a website, but even with some of the paid webhosts you can even expect to get a free domain name if you shop around on the internet.
