Unless you are using Blake Flannery's fireworks photos, be careful about photo usage

Some hubsters and websters are generous about their photos. Others consider their photos to be business and why not? Photography is their profession of choice. It is how they make money for the nest egg they need to eat or put their kids through college or retire. Because these folk have invested their livelihood in the art of capturing the moment, we must respect their copyrights or risk getting sued.

So where do we get photos to illustrate our hub articles, if we can't use whatever photos we find online?

Anyone reading my hubs lately might notice that I have turned to eBay and amazon and YouTube for graphic expression. Certainly those advertising at eBay and amazon should only thank me, as I am offering them exposure and possible sales. Amazon book images, magazine covers, and movie posters as well as CDs are promotional editorial images and don't usually require credit.

But YouTube is different. YouTube does not view every video uploaded into its site and so we must use our own common sense and tap into our personal integrity to determine whether or not we should use what we find.

YouTube users are cautioned, "Do not upload any TV shows, music videos, music concerts or commercials without permission unless they consist entirely of content you created yourself. The Copyright Tips page and the Community Guidelines can help you determine whether your video infringes someone else's copyright."

It is our responsibility as a YouTube user to follow the tips and guidelines. Sometimes we might not decide right. But we are the deciders.

There are other legitimate ways to get hold of photos. Check out these sites:

Freefoto.com found at http://www.freefoto.com/index.jsp;

http://freestockphotos.com/ available for limited use;

a site for photographers to share their work with others without charge found at http://www.sxc.hu/;

http://www.morguefile.com/;

http://www.flickr.com/groups/freeuse.

If you don't like these, google "free photo use" and oogle all the sites that pop up. Of course read the fine print before uploading the photos, but find joy in the generosity of your fellow photographers.

If you would like to take photos of special events and need a press pass, consider connecting through your local newspaper by offering to take photo assignments their staff might not find interesting and voila! You will have the credentials you need to take photos to support your articles and interests.

Obviously, the best way to avoid infringing upon other's copyrights is to take the photos yourself. You can always photo-shop them to suit your needs! The photo above was taken at a Lamborghini dealership with permission from the owner. He wouldn't allow my nephew to touch any of his cars, but we were allowed to turn this photo into an 18x24 inch poster for Thomas to hang in his room.

Thanks for this hub. I was actually wondering from where should I get photos for my hubs.

Jay, there are also locations where you can purchase photos, like the Associated Press, Creative Commons, iStockphoto.com, GettyImages.com, etc. If you don't find something free, that is! Thank you for stopping.

Very useful Hub, I have yet to incorporate many visuals with my prose, I know they would go a long way to improving the stories. Thank you again!

Hello adam! I imagine many of your cartoons are copyrighted but maybe you are good at drawing your own?! If so, I look forward to viewing them!

It strikes me that paying to use a photo on a hub would likely be a losing proposition. And I wonder what the actual likelihood of being sued for using an un-labeled photo from GOOGLE Images really is. Pretty low, I suspect. And if someone objects it's not hard to remove the photo. It seems to me that lawsuits/objections are likely mainly in situations where the unauthorized user is making a significant amount of money from the page on which the photo appears. I certainly haven't made enough money from a single hub to make it worthwhile for anybody to sue me. As a matter of fact, I haven't made enough from all my hubs to make a lawsuit worth the trouble.

It would be helpful if Google or somebody would figure out a method that would allow potential photo users to determine which photos are in the public domain and which are not. As far as YouTube is concerned, the system seems to be that users put up videos and they stay up unless the copyright holder objects. And if so, YouTube removes the video. I've added quite a few YouTube videos on my hubs, and fairly often the links go dead because someone objected to YouTube (not to my hub) and YouTube pulled the video. That seems to be the way the system works. I don't see any practical way to tell which YouTube videos violate copyrights and which don't. I don't see anything wrong with letting YouTube continue to deal with this issue. These issues will gradually become clearer than they are at the moment.

Yes, Ralph, it is an issue that we at HubPages don't probably need to concern ourselves with too much. I became aware of this issue because I am writing for an ezine called The Examiner and they have very strict guidelines regarding image use. It opened up a new world for me and gave me a new appreciation for the challenges artists and writers have trying to earn a decent wage for their efforts. This awareness gave me the initiative to explore the subject in more detail and I have enjoyed researching the topic for these few Hubs. I appreciate your reading them and also enjoyed reading the Hub you wrote on a similar subject. In other words, the examination expanded my world and my knowledge. Thanks again for reading my pieces.

I've used a few free photos but It felt like so much work going back and forth. And I was thinking (like you said at the begining), writers don't want to write for free so why would they want to give me their photos for free? Great info though maybe I will try the ebay, amazon route. Or free photos again. Thanks for the great info!
