Freedom Haters ask What is Freedom?
57After September 11, 2001 George W. Bush started throwing around the word 'freedom' quite a bit. Enemies of freedom. Freedom haters. Because they hate freedom. They can't stand that we are free. These words and various other forms of these words were spewed by Bush, his administration counterparts, and random right wing talk radio/cable TV hacks. Very rarely, though, did anyone take the time to define the term freedom within the assumptive context that there are people, U.S. citizens and foreign 'terrorists' alike, who apparently hate it.
Based on my sociopolitical views I guess I, according to what I think their definition is, hate freedom. But I am not sure exactly what it is I am purported to hate. This hub takes a preliminary look at what all of these freedom-hating accusations might mean by taking apart exactly what the Bushian definition of freedom might be.
What is Freedom?
Maybe it's because I am a freedom hater, but I have a hard time believing that the conservatives are referring to things like freedom of speech, expression, religion, etc, etc... when they classify those left of Arlen Spector as 'freedom haters.' I mean, heck, I am totally on board with each and every one of those things. There is nothing that I like more than being able to shoot my mouth off or go to a synagogue one day and a mosque the next without getting clipped for it. Thank you, American soldiers currently deployed next to oil pipelines around the world.
I also don't think they are referring to things like sexual freedom. They have a major beef, it seems, with sex. Gay sex. Certain levels of straight sex. Unless it involves presumably concealed bathroom stalls or an empty pew they want no part of kinky-oriented freedom.
I think what they mean - definitely Bush - by freedom. Freedom is 'economic freedom.' In other words, capital-fuckin-ism. Do you really think the neocons give a rat's ass if people in Saudi Arabia (wait, we are hands off there, I wonder why) or China (wait, there too, why so?)... I mean in Iraq or Afghanistan or Georgia (not the American state) are able to yell 'fire' in a movie theatre. Do you think they really care whether a nation thinks a woman deserves to be raped if she shows an eye lid? I don't. But I do think they are concerned with whether or not there is a McDonald's or Pizza Hut kiosk inside that movie theater in the desert.
Freedom is equal to the spreading of democracy, which is equal to the penetration of American capital-fuckin-ism into every corner of the world. Beat the shit out of your women, sell us plastic shit that breaks in a week... we don't care, just accept our culture. If you don't, you hate freedom.
And Just So I Don't Have to Comment
I know, I know... I hate freedom. I am not a patriot. I am anti-American. I am a spineless coward because I didn't join the Marines and 'cos I don't think waterboarding is cool. Whatever.
I don't think all is well in places like the Middle East. I would love it if the United States of America stopped all of the transparent talk of freedom and actually righted some wrongs... justed some unjusts! I don't buy the lefty notion that we ought to respect every culture out there that is different than ours. I am not going to be tolerant of men who treat women like shit. It's not okay to stone a woman, to cut off someones hand... don't tell me its cultural. It's bull shit. But, what's even worse is that we don't care. Freedom to the American establishment(s) has nothing to do with liberating those who are oppressed. It has every thing to do with expanding the American way of life to non-Americans. It has everything to do with control and domination... of resources, of people, of the story.
I would like to think that Obama is on the right side of this coin, but I am not so sure.

Great Hub. It all comes down to money. If there were money in Darfur, we would be there.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I'm also a "freedom hater" in Bush's and the neo-cons terms. I like that you have written about this. From the perspective of Africa, which has had its share of US "capital-fuckin-ism" almost to death (and I mean that literally), if freedom is what the neo-cons and Bush say it is we would rather do without, thanks very much!
But I do respect other cultures, though not the stoning of women or the cutting off of hands. Funny the neo-cons don't say anything about the things that go on in Saudi Arabia and China, as you say. Things like chopping people's heads of with axes, and sticking bayonets up their bums if their necks aren't stretched out far enough? Who's fooling who here?
Thanks for having the courage to post this. A great job.
Love and peace
Tony
