Today, the number of Americans undergoing daily treatments for alcoholism has reached almost one million.

Presently, there are almost one million Americans who are subjected to daily alcoholism treatments. Some of these involve medications, self-help groups, psychological, behavioral and social methods with the aim of helping alcoholics in freeing themselves from alcohol addiction. Many medical institutions have also started to introduce brief drug intervention methods, where patients receive counseling from trained medical experts.

It is not easy for many patients to break away from alcohol addiction, especially if they are found to be alcohol dependents. As such, treatments are aimed to help these people abstain from alcohol, and are supervised by alcohol abuse therapists. They come up with a treatment module or plans that are specific to each patient's needs. These also include behavioral modification, counseling, self-help books, and follow-up treatments.

Support groups are also effective social and self-help approaches of alcohol addiction treatment. Perhaps one of the most popular support groups that deal with alcohol addiction is the Alcoholics Anonymous, one of the 12-step programs that help people work on their personal recovery. These programs involve admission of the problem, recognition that help is available, reliance on this help, identification of defects in character, apologizing to the people that were harmed, and helping other people who have the same problem or situation.

To increase the chances of recovery for alcohol dependents, it is also necessary to help them change their lifestyle through psychological treatments. One of the key elements of this therapy is the non-drinking spouse therapy, where alcoholics are effectively influenced against alcohol intake. Psychological and behavioral treatments may also involve helping alcoholics gain a sense of responsibility and ability to control distorted emotions and thoughts.

For many alcoholics, recovering from addiction is never easy because of the withdrawal symptoms that they may experience. However, there are many medical professionals and groups that offer effective substance abuse treatments that also deal with these withdrawal symptoms. Only such medical treatments and therapies give alcoholics a fighting chance against addiction and the harmful effects of excessive alcohol intake.

There are no quick fixes for the diseases of drug abuse and alcoholism. Recovery is an ongoing process. The skills one learns during intensive rehabilitation treatment must be integrated into everyday life and this takes time.

Some drug addiction treatment programs will offer a follow-up program but only in one location which may make it difficult to use.

Drug rehabilitation treatment programs should include a quality, continuing care program that supports and monitors recovery.
