Book Review -- French Women Don't Sleep Alone
Has dating become like a 2-hour interview? Has Love turned into a Job? Are you approaching your emotions like you would an MBA? For any woman of any age who is suffering from “dating fatigue syndrome” or tired of listening to the same old advice from Oprah or Dr. Phil or who has ever wondered where all the magic has gone, Jamie Cat Callan’s new book French Women Don’t Sleep Alone is a breath of fresh air.
Her book, subtitled the Pleasurable Secrets to Finding Love, explains why American women have been missing out when it comes to the opposite sex. There are no rules when it comes to the French concept of love. It has nothing to do with beauty, work or even motivation, but rather with the Gallic unique sense of originality and artfulness in their romance and sensual, flirtatious play.
French Women Don’t Sleep Alone, lets you in on the secrets of why French women always feel sexy; why French women walk everywhere and love to be seen; where French women meet men; and, perhaps most intriguing, what a French woman does when her man misbehaves. This book will engage your senses, all five of them because that’s just what the French woman uses to captivate a man.
IN THE BEGINNING… THERE IS ALWAYS CHAMPAGNE
According to Ms. Callan’s new book, French women don’t waste their time on boring “American” style dates for the simple reason that there is no art to it. “Think about it,” she says. “When you are on a date, the man knows you are in the market. He knows he is being judged as potential boyfriend/husband material. And he is judging you. Are you wife material? Girlfriend material? Roll in the hay material?” Everyone is in such a hurry to lay all their cards on the table that the mystery is taken out of the whole process.
The French woman is more apt to give a little dinner party that’s the perfect cover to getting to know a man better. It gives her a chance to see him in a social setting while it gives her a chance to show off her own intellectual and conversational skills.
French women are all about mystery, seduction, and maybe a little subterfuge, anything to keep the other party interested and always guessing. Their motto, if they had one, would be something like: “Love is something that happens while you are going about your life.”
From the opening chapter “French Women Don’t Date”, Ms. Callan explores what it’s like to look at love and relationships through the Gallic perspective. They integrate love and romance and beauty into their everyday lives. “They end the cycle of either/or: dressing for a date or dressing for the gym. Going out vs. staying in.” They embrace their sensuality. It’s all about pleasure and feeling sexy. “Finding real pleasure means taking your time, and waiting for a lover of quality… Yes, we can often sleep with anyone we choose… but isn’t it more delicious to wait until something really worthy comes along?”
IT’S ALL ABOUT PLEASURE
According to Ms. Callan, the French woman seduces everyone she meets, but not in the crass sense of trying to get everyone they meet into bed. For the French woman, the art of seduction encompasses far more. It is a way of negotiating their world by allowing everyone to experience their intelligence, their wit and their charm. But most of all it is about confidence. From her matching lingerie to just feeling good in her own skin, the French woman knows the femininity is not an either/or proposition. Beauty is an equal opportunity employer. Twenty-somethings are beautiful as are “women of that certain age” who move with a presence that can literally mesmerize all the eyes following them. Just think of Catherine Deneuve, Arielle Dombasle or Fanny Ardant.
French Women Don’t Sleep Alone empowers its readers to practice the fine are of allurement, the opportunity for any woman to feel the power of her own desirability every day at every moment whether they are seventeen or seventy-five. The French woman strives for balance because she knows that balance equals happiness which equals beauty. “For the French, beauty is not about the obvious, but rather beauty is seen as a kind of radiance that comes from (living) an intellectual and emotional life.”
French Women Don’t Sleep Alone is the perfect light hearted read for any woman who is interested in discovering “that version of herself that is elegant and discreet, sexy, mysterious, intriguing, charismatic, and charming”. You don’t have to BE French to discover a hidden French woman in you.

I'm reminded by your excellent review of something I read years ago.
Two young couples, one American, one French, lie on a beach. When the man with the American girl becomes amorous in a rather clumsy manner, the girl shrieks, "Stop it!" and turns away from him.
When the same thing occurs between the other couple, the French girl looks into her man's eyes and says in a soft, seductive voice, "Gently, gently."
Excellent review. I liked that bit about "For the French woman, the art of seduction encompasses far more. It is a way of negotiating their world by allowing everyone to experience their intelligence, their wit and their charm. But most of all it is about confidence".
