Tips for Buying Tropical Fish Online and in Stores

Buying Tropical Fish Online

Controlling and monitoring the aquarium temperature is important in order to keep tropical fish healthy. One may use the Reef One heater stand to help the aquarium heater securely fixed inside the aquarium. A correct aquarium thermometer should be used as well.

If you are planning to buy tropical fish online or even in any pet shops, you should do some research first about it so that you can provide its exact needs. Buy only fish that are small in size and you'll just adjust the filter as the fish grows. Just like adding several fish at one time, large fish added might cause water quality problems.

Different fish always demand different requirements, if you think that your aquarium won't provide the proper environment then better leave the fish at the shop. You may ask advise from fish keeping experts before buying the fish, but you should not be offended if you are told not to have a particular species.

Several factors must be considered before you buy tropical fish online or in stores for your freshwater tropical fish aquarium. I'm sure you will be glad if you have chosen the best fish and you'll realize why doing some research and learning more about the fish is very important. Once you get enough information about them, you will be able to know what to look for when you go to a pet shop or when you buy tropical fish online. Listed as follows are few things that you should look at for you to have a healthy and colorful fish that may give life to your freshwater tropical fish aquarium:

  1. While looking at the tank, look for the fish that come to the front glass. If the fish is hiding behind the ornaments, then you should not buy that fish. The fish you want should be swimming around freely.
  2. Look for a fish that has a good appetite or can be fed quickly. In general these fish will grow bigger, colorful and healthier. Fish that are hard to feed usually end up being a smaller fish.
  3. Very dark or pale colored fish is not advisable to buy. These fish might be under stress or might have the risk of having a disease and will not last long once you transfer it to your aquarium.
  4. Watch out for livebearers for some of the females might be heavily pregnant. These fish are stressful to move and they frequently die as a result. Look for a medium size female instead that does not have a big round bump.
  5. It is important that you only choose compatible fish that will be put to your aquarium together. So you have to ask for assistance to make sure that you don't mix aggressive fish with peaceful fish.
  6. Don't buy all your fish at once because it might overstock your tank and cause ammonia problems that usually result to fish deaths.

You will never encounter problems in buying freshwater tropical fish if you follow the six tips mentioned above. An additional note, fish that are growing too big should be avoided. Some of the fish that grow very large like the bottom feeding fish like plecs, loach, catfish, and others will likely damage their whiskers on the pointed ceramic media or decorations as they grow bigger.

Hi Randyith, nice hub :)

I bought a tank off ebay on the weekend with 25 fish included. It took me until last night to identify them all, with the last fish being identified as a Chinese Algae Eater! I read they are very aggressive/territorial, which explains why it spent an hour last night chasing the other fish around the tank!! I begged my local fish shop to take it off my hands today, and its coming out of the tank tomorrow morning! Phew!
