Friends & Hubbers

You Pick Your Friends
I'm big on friends. I value them as much as family. Your family didn't choose to you... they love you. Your friends, on the other hand, have made the choice. It has always deeply flattered me that a friend will, out of all the things he or she could be doing, choose to be with me. I've always treasured this act of generosity and will never take it for granted.
The Bohemians
You would think, from the above paragraph, that I've never had a lot of friends, and you'd be right. I've never been one to have a lotof friends. But I've always had a small circle of close friends. I have friendships that go back as far as 40 years, and some that are just a few years old. Because I'm a musician, 99% of my friends are artistic types. Fellow musicians, dancers, actors, sculptors, painters, models, poets, etc. Artistes tend to gravitate to fellow artistes. Nobody else really understands us ...or can tolerate us. One of the two. They're true bohemians. Aloof and unconcerned. But underneath all that facade they are always terribly passionate, fiercely loyal and easily broken. I love them all.
Man's Best Friend
Then, of course, there's your dog. Is there anything like the love of a dog? The ex-wife and I had some very good relationships with our cats, but it was nothing like a dog. You can see it in the dog's eyes. He or she wants nothing more in the world than to be with you. Doesn't matter what you're doing either. Watching TV, walking around, jogging, playing in the yard. Every moment spent with you is fulfilling that dog's sole wish. It's amazing, and all too often taken for granted.
Co-Worker Friends
The friendships I have now, my newly acquired friendships, are different. They're co-workers. We enjoy working together and have mutual respect for one another, but we don't see each other outside of work. Yet, I consider them friends. Not in the same sense as my old friends, but still, friends.
Cyber Friends
Now I have a new type of friend; my fellow Hubbers. My cyber friends. These are the hubbers I look forward to hearing from and enjoy reading what they have to say. I don't know what most of them look like and will probably never meet them face to face - very few even live in the same state I do, but there's a connection. You know? I am fascinated by this new type of "friendship." Certainly it can never take the place of the face to face, go out drinking and shooting pool with your buddy, traditional friendship, but I value it, none the less.
Perhaps if we were all independently wealthy and didn't have the responsibilities of everyday life we could make regular trips to visit one another... even Misha in Russia! But we're not (unless one of you is holding out) and we do, so we'll make do with our long-distance, pen pal relationship and enjoy it for what it is: a connection with another human being in a land far, far away... or across state.
Bette Midler performs "Friends"
There's something magical about watching this lady perform. It makes me smile.

Yep, thanks to you. I still don't think I've got AdSense activated... not sure.
Great hub. I enjoy you're writing style. Very well done. Outside of the marital realtionship, good friends are to be cherished and loved. There is purpose behind man being created to live in community. Keep up the good work.
As our nest emptied, our middle son gave us a puppy he had picked out carefully, studying the dog's personality and interaction with the rest of the litter and with humans. A little black dach-a-cock-a-poo. His name is Buddy and he is our constant companion. He lives for our love and attention. He returns it and never minds being woke up just to talk. Yet, he is careful to not wake me up, but let me move my foot in the morning, or make a sound, he's right in my face eager for hugs and conversation. He grabs his leash and brings it to us, asking for his walk. He faces the day with a dazzling smile.
My cat of 17 years ( had one for 27) is an aging Siamese -- so affectionate and attentive. All of our animals are just like our kids were...snuggly, demanding, sweet, annoying, and completely ours. The best friends, they are always there for you. I love my people friends too. Great hub, thanks!!!
Thank you very much, Rob. I've got a lump in my throat... no wait, that's a pizza chip. Have you tried these things? By T.G.I. Friday's. Delicious!
Thank you Marisue. I found the dog (while walking home!) my mom has now, and named her Shy. She is her pampered, spoiled, affectionate, very emotional pride & joy. She's a mix of several smallish dogs but the border collie markings and behavior (she herds ducks and nutria) seems to be most prominant. Her face is incredibly cute... kind of foxish. I have a close-up as wallpaper on my cell phone.
Thank you for sharing all this insight about friendship in your hub.
You're very welcome, SweetiePie. I enjoy talking about my friends... they're WAY bigger freaks than me.

Hi CW,
I wonder what makes dogs so loyal, anyway.
Yes, this is a new form of friendship - but still like the old "pen pal."
I see you found Amazon.
