Moving is one of the many stresses that people often try to avoid. Not only can it be time consuming and frustrating, it can quickly add up to a large cost. However there are several things you can do to save yourself some of the financial strain from moving.

One easy and frugal tip is to reduce the amount of stuff you will be moving. It can cost more to have a large amount of things to move. Packing costs as well as fuel to transport more things can add up. Sorting through your household before the move will help you be prepared when it is time to begin packing. You can host a yard sale or sale some items online to not only help reduce what you have but to also earn some extra money.

Once you have reduced what you own it is time to begin packing. One cheap way to pack is to use free boxes. Many stores toss out boxes that items were shipped in. Often you can call your local stores and see if they are willing to part with any of their boxes. You can also use the boxes that any of your electronics came in, such as televisions and stereos. Boxes from things you have ordered can also be saved to be used later for packing. If you need packing for breakable and delicate items you can also find that for free. Often office supply stores will throw out boxes full of Styrofoam and bubble wrap that their items come packed with. You can also use your own towels, sheets, and blankets as packing for fragile items and kill two birds with one stone.

Though it may be convenient to hire professional movers it can also be costly. Renting a truck and doing your own moving can save you lots. If you feel like your move is too much to handle on your own seek out friends and family who would be willing to help. If you are moving locally often you can borrow a truck or trailer from a friend and pay for only the fuel, this can be much cheaper than renting a truck to haul your things with. If you are moving a long distance some people find that packing some of their belonging in flat rate boxes and mailing them to their new address can save money. Doing so can mean less items to be moved and eliminate the need for a large rental truck, or for any sized rental truck at all. Of course this takes careful planning to make sure that you can save by doing so.

If you are transferring any services such as phone or Internet find out if there are any discounts. Some services will reduce their fees if you have a great payment history or if you are staying within the same service area. Sometimes phone companies will offer a discount if you are willing to take on the phone number of the previous owner. Contact your services and be sure to ask if there are ways to reduce transfer or set-up fees.

Moving to a new home can be stressful enough. No one needs the added stress of spending a fortune. Using these simple tips you can easily save money on your moving costs, and hopefully relieve a little of the moving frustration.
