Fulfilling the Law

Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Jesus states here that the law is being fulfilled. He didn't come to destroy the law, as some thought at the time. In this study we will see how Jesus fulfilled the law.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Here we see that the wages of sin is death. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The law states that death comes to those who disobey the law and sin in the eyes of God. When Jesus fulfilled the law, He died. Just as Jesus fulfilled the law we must also fulfill the law. We are born in flesh and sin is attached to us because of the flesh. As Paul wrote, (Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? ). This body of death is the flesh that we carry each and ever day that we live. How can we be delivered from this body of death? Jesus is the only one who can deliver us. But Jesus first had to rid Himself of the same body of death.

Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. When we accept Jesus, we then serve God with our minds. This means we serve God with understanding of God's Word through Jesus Christ. We no longer have to fulfill the desires of the flesh for we have put away the flesh and have been born a new creature in Christ Jesus. Old things have passed away and all things are made new.

Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

We are no longer condemned as are those that refuse God's sacrifice. We now walk in the spirit and not after the flesh.

Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

We are made free from the sin of law and death in Jesus Christ. His sacrifice has made the way for all who will to enter into the kingdom of God. It costs us not one penny to gain this great gift that God gave us.

Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

God had condemned sin in the spirit a long time ago. Now, in the body of Jesus Christ, sin has been condemned in the flesh also. Jesus was the image of sin and carried sin on His back all the way to the cross and then to the grave. When Jesus was resurrected the sin was then cast off His body and He was made whole and completely restored to what God had ordained for Him. He now sits at the right hand of the Father. The right hand is a signification of strength. So then Jesus is the power of God.

Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

When we give our life to God through Jesus Christ we are then reborn in spirit. We are no longer followers of the flesh but followers of the spirit. Many times I've heard the term "carnal Christian", but this can't be a correct term. According to the Word of God we are no longer carnal but now are spiritual. We may seem carnal to others but we are still born of God in the spirit.

Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The scriptures show that all who are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh. In other words they are carnal. They please the flesh and do things according to the flesh. They do not have the spirit of God living inside as believers do. Any person who does not have the spirit of God inside of them is dead to God (Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Joh 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ). There is a way to come to God that I have written many times in my Bible studies. It has been ordained since the very beginning, and it's still true today. You see, God has never changed.

Man has changed many different ways all through time but God has always remained exactly the same as He has always been. Jesus is the way (Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. ) and He is the only way (Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. ) to salvation and to reconcile back to God what was lost in the garden of Eden when Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. God knew men would sin and disobey Him since the beginning. God made a way to reconcile man back to Himself. We must accept God's way or simply reject Him completely. There is no neutral ground, no fence to sit on. The love that God has for man is a love so strong and powerful that man can't begin to completely understand it. Love is so much more than an emotion. Real love is done in deeds and works. The love of God is a sacrificial love that was sacrificed on the cross in the person of Jesus Christ.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Carnal minds are against God completely. They cannot please God at all. God is a Spirit, and will be recognized and worshipped in spirit. Will you fulfill the law in your own heart? Will you accept what God has offered to you freely this day and time? What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul? God gave you the soul that is in you. You have the right to do whatever you want with your own soul. That is freewill. Those that believe, keep your soul on the path to righteousness. Do not turn back nor turn away completely and give it all up. The devil wants you to turn away and forget about God. This will never happen. If you do turn back you will never ever forget God. The touch and the love that God has shown you will always be in your heart and your mind. Keep diligent watch as the times and seasons come and go. The spirit of the enemy is out there seeking to destroy all that God has built in you.

Prayer

Father God, in all diligence we seek to draw closer to you. We ask Lord for strength to keep seeking your face. We ask Lord that you keep revealing yourself to us as we walk and talk in your spirit. Help us to recognize what we need to change and give us all the grace we need to change. Let us worship you and praise you in spirit and in truth. Let us help the lost to come to know you. Help us to fulfill all that you have planned out for us. In Jesus precious and mighty name, Amen.

Hi SirDent!  Yes, so many churches still preach the law, in spite of salvation through Jesus Christ and don't understand what it means that Jesus came to fulfill the Law.  I came across some scripture that is so perfectly explanitory for those who want to understand more ~~

Romans 7:4-6 NIV "So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we were controlled by the sinful nature,[a] the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code."

Romans 10:4 NIV "Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes."

Galatians 2:16 NIV "Know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified."

PRAISE GOD!

I re-read this again, because it's so good and so true.  I continually come into discussions with even those who profess to be Christians, and those who come from the Jewish background who put so much emphasis on keeping the law.  Just this morning again, it was important to remind people that it wasn't the law of God that was done away with, but the PURPOSE of the law, which was to make man righteous before God.  Jesus is our righteousness now.

Even the Jew who kept every single law was yet found with the sin of materialism and pride.  Some "religious" folk continually want to hang onto the feeling of righteousness keeping the law gives them, and thus condemn anyone who doesn't.  These are they the Lord called "hypocrites".  If we feel righteous by keeping the law, we negate the PURPOSE of its "fulfillment", in that only Jesus is our righteousness from the moment He took our sins to the cross.  AMEN.

Sir Dent,  Love the hub I believe this is why Paul said I die daily. But we know that we must keep our lamps full of oil and be ready for his coming. Amen

I was reading this the morning in Ephesians!

Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law. Gal 3:25

Hey Carrie God Bless you.
