Is Full Coverage Auto Insurance Really Full?

Full coverage auto insurance is a general term used to define a car insurance that covers also physical damage, meaning that it covers any type of collision between your car and other objects and it also includes comprehensive coverage. This is good in case your car gets hit while being parked and in those cases when collisions happen from your fault. Theft, vandalism and weather damage are covered by this type of car insurance.

Because each company has its own limitations and understanding of terms, you need to be very specific and see if your full coverage auto insurance actually covers all events you may be interested in. For example, if you are interested in having bodily insurance covered for the driver and for the passengers of the car, you need to make it clear to the agent and to check that it is included in your policy.

Cost of Full Coverage Car Insurance

The price of such a car insurance depends on several factors such as the age of your car, the catalog price, the waivers and clauses you want to have in your insurance policy and by the insurance company itself.

There are also other factors that influence how big your insurance premiums are going to be:

  • your driving accidents records: if you have a clean record, some agents will offer you a discount, as you present a lower level of risk
  • your special clauses: if you want vandalism protection, some companies offer it in the basic package, while others will charge you additionally. If you keep your car in a garage, you may think it's safe not to buy the vandalism or theft protection, but if your parking spot is outside, and if you live in a bad neighborhood, this could save you a lot of money afterwards.

Not all cars can benefit from full coverage insurance. For very old cars, usually agents don't make it available, as it's not cost effective for them. Or if they do, they'd charge you so much that you'd better be paying for the repairs in case if damage than paying these insurance premiums.

When making comparisons, always try to compare apples with apples. Take quotes from different carriers in the same conditions such as deductibles, limits, car price evaluation, amount of coverage. Otherwise, comparisons don't make sense. If you don't know how to do this, you can always get in touch with an auto insurance specialist who can help you in determining which is the best and cheapest option for your case.
