This is definitely one of the places I would love to visit. In fact Greece is one of the favourite tourist destinations in Europe. In fact is has at least 12 million tourists each year. Greece has a population of 10,610,000 and Athens is it's capital. Here are some other fun facts:

• -greece includes many islands

• -greeks love to dance and have more than 63 folk dances

• -no part of greece is more than 85 miles from the sea

• -one of the largest merchant ship fleets in the world

• -one of the oldest nations in Europe-started 2,500 yrs ago

• -our culture mimcs greece with architecture, art, science, math, literature, music, philosophy and mythology

• -the National Anthem contains 158 verses- no one has memorized all 158

• -ancient and modern greeks believe in Gods

• -tossing an apple to a girl was a traditional way of proposing

Okay, so now since Greece was the spot for the Olympic Games lets take a look at some of those fun facts. 

• -the first olympics were in 776 BCE and there was one event, a short 200 meter sprint called a stade

• -thousand would come from all over greece to watch the games, the main stadium held 45,000 and they still needed thousands of tents!

• -married women could be put to death for watching the games!

• -in the ancient olympics winners were given olive wreaths

• -they were so serious about thier games that one athlete who backed out was fined with cowardice! That had to be embarrassing!

Just like any ancient civilization Greece is certainly not without it's fables, folklore, myths and creatures. Greeks have actually found bones they believe to be of giants! Even today bones are found in Greece but believed to be the remains of mammoths, mastodons etc.

Tales were told 2,000 years ago by Greek travelers about a one-horned magical unicorn! Not to mention some of the other creatures from Greek mythology like Medusa,

Of course there was the famous Pegasus, a incredible winged horse. In Greek mythology this is the offspring of the God Poseidon. He took this form to romp the earth.

The creature Chimera was killed in greek mythology. It had the head and body of a lioness, a goats head coming from it's back and a snake tail! Oh, and it breathed fire!
