Games, Activities, and Crafts

When you think about organizing fun things for kids to do, does it fill you with dread?  Do you balk at the thought of having to figure out yet ANOTHER activity for them to do to keep them happy?  Well you have come to the right place!  I used to struggle with this on a daily basis with my two preschoolers stuck at home with me all day every day with NO CAR.  I would get an overload of guilt if we watched too much tv, but it took so much energy to think of fun activities.

So what did I do to get out of this rut?  It was as simple as running over to my public library and checking out a copy of "The Preschooler's Busy Book".  This book was a lifesaver.  It just really got me thinking that I don't need to have AMAZING intensive things for the kids to do every day.  But a few little fun things will go a looooong way to saving the sanity of our household.

Children's Games

There are many board games for families that you can buy that are fun for the kids AND for the parents. Two of my favorites are over on the right hand side. If you don't feel up for purchasing board games you can always try some break out a deck of cards for some simple card games like "War", "Go Fish" or "Crazy 8's". If you are looking for a more physical game you can try old favorites like duck duck goose, simon says, freeze tag, or red light green light.

Easy Crafts For Kids

When kids are bored on a rainy day one of the best things you can do is organize an art project for them. You can choose to be as simple or complex as you want. There are a lot of fun websites for kids where they give craft ideas or printables that you can create simply art projects with. For a little more in depth projects, pick up a craft ideas book or dvd such as the ones on the left and print or photocopy the materials.

Children's Learning Activities

I have never yet sent my pre-k kids to a formal preschool. Instead we just do theme based activities to expand their horizons and allow them to have fun. It's pretty fun to choose themes and then find educational activities around that theme. Science projects are a favorite around my house, as well as playing sculptorades with playdough. We've also had some pretty fun math activities that involved counting M&M's and of course eating them afterwards!  You really take almost any everyday task you do and turn it into a fun activity for the kids.  My kids absolutely love to bake with me so it's something we do quite often.

Fun Things For Kids

Whether it be games, crafts, or other activities hopefully this gets your juices flowing on coming up fun things for kids to do when they are bored out of their minds.

Thanks for the tips on books. I was able to request two of them from the library. I have a 2 and 3 year old, so I need ideas to keep them out of trouble. Thanks!
