Bread Puppets and Animals

I used to do this with my grandchildren: we took some flour, water (or milk), yeast, and a big bowl. I mixed everything together and prepared the mixture like you do when you want to make bread. Then I asked the kids to take small balls of the pastry, and to give them shapes: small puppets, dogs, cats, hearts, stars... everything they wanted.

Then we put everything in a tray, in the oven, and we baked small breads in funny shapes. They had a lot of fun, ans we always ended up by eating those funny breads. We've extended this game into birthday cake ideas. They didn't bake the cakes, but they tried to be as creative as possible.

Save time, buy semi-prepared dough

Well, for those of you who don't have too much time to play, or if you don't want to have flour all over your kitchen, look in the stores, and you'll find ready-made dough which you can use with the same success. It is still big fun, as the kids are interested in modelling the puppets, and not in obtaining the material ;)

Last time we made the dough in house, it took me two hours to clean the iron balusters of the staircase. The kids made sure all of them got dirty and wrought iron takes forever to clean.

Cake Decorating

Children would most probably love any activities that are related to kitchen and cooking. This is why you could try to involve them in cake decorating. There are lots of supplies available so you can come up with really cool cake decorating ideas.

One resource I found interesting and I stayed a member for almost one year was this cake decorating membership site. It's about $20 a month and the videos that come with the membership are explanatory enough so one can quickly learn how to decorate cakes and make creative candies. Of course the site owners will try to suck you in buying all kind of stuff from their store, but you're not forced to do it, if you can find those supplies elsewhere at more convenient prices.

Thank you, HeinMarais and Mr Marmelade. You can try a variation with some dough for doughnuts - I think you can find some ready-made in stores.

There are many things kids like to help out with in the kitchen. The kitchen seems to be the center of the universe when it comes to families. Just last night my granddaughter (7 years old) and I made doughnuts. I had a couple of rolls of those refrigerator biscuits and I had planned on making bacon pull-apart bread out of them. I hadn't gotten around to it and last night the tubes of biscuits popped open in the fridge. I heard the noise and when I found them open I knew I had to cook them right away. I have made doughnuts out of them before so I told my granddaughter we needed to make doughnuts. She said she never had any like that before. We proceeded to heat up some cooking oil (enough so the doughnuts would float in without touching the bottom of the skillet). Then we worked the biscuits in our hands and made a hole in the center of them with out fingers. Then we deep fried them until golden brown. My granddaughter loved helping do this. I then mixed up a glaze for them and I let her dip the doughnuts in the glaze and place them on the plate. Needless to say, my granddaughter loved them.

My kids have also liked to help make cookies. Snickerdoodles was always one of our favorites because they are not only good, the kids can form the dough into small balls and roll them in a sugar/cinnamon mixture before we baked them. The kids also like to help decorate a cake or sprinkle those little candy decorations on cookies. There is a lot of things you can make to include the kids. Plus it is also fun to work with them and spend some quality time with them. This is something that is lacking in many homes today. The world is going around so fast there is not enough time for some parents to take the time to be with their kids when they can or they just do not want to be bothered with them.

I know it's not food, but I used to love making salt dough Christmas decorations.
