Zinc is an essential mineral. It is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrate, energy, protein synthesis, carbon dioxide transport.

Other Function of Zinc in the Body :

  1. Essential in the healing of wound
  2. Anti-stress
  3. For normal skeletal growth
  4. Helps in improvement of brain function (including memory).
  5. Helps alleviate benign prostatic hypertrophy.
  6. Aid in the synthesis of insulin (most diabetic have low level of zinc).

Symptoms of Zinc Deficiency :

Shortened stature, Lethargy, Apathy, Small sex organs, Delayed wound healing, Loss if taste and smell, Poor appetite, Childhood hyperactivity, Diabetes, Stretch marks on the skin, Acne, Impotence, Irregular menstruation, Enlarged prostate, Painful joints, White spots on fingernails, Dark skin pigmentation, Frequent infection, Hair loss, Poor circulation.

Cause of Zinc Toxicity :

  • Inhalation of zinc oxide.
  • Severe pollution
  • Storage of food and drink in galvanized container that allow zinc to leach out.

Sign of Zinc Toxicity :

  • Vomiting, Diarrhea, Drowsiness
  • Induces copper and/or iron deficiency anemia.

Daily Requirement - 15 mg. / day

Supplemental Dosage - 30 mg. / day

Note : Trace minerals; use only under doctors guidance.

Therapeutic Dosage - If you give high dose of zinc, close monitoring of red blood cells and hemoglobin is a must, for if given too long it causes anemia. Some patients developed anemia at a dose of 30 mg. 2x a day.

Food Sources : Fish, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, onion, mushroom, brewer's yeast, whole grains, mustard, nuts, peas, beans, carrots, all vegetables, herring, meat, eggs, liver, oyster (fair content of cholesterol but rich un high density lipoprotein which prevent platelets clumping and stickiness.
