On October 30th, 2008 during a speech at the University of Missouri, Barack Obama issued the following statement, "We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America." When I listened to this statement for the first time It didn't register with me what impact a fundamental change could have on our nation. Reflection over the last few months have lead me to ask the question. What did the then presidential candidate Barak Obama mean by "Fundamentally transforming the United States?" Common sense dictates to simply take him at his word or rather the words he speaks. Barack Obama is a highly educated, charismatic and articulate man who chooses his words very carefully. His manner of speech and articulation of subject matter is the lynch pin of his prowess in the political arena. Thus strong consideration for the words Obama and other politicians choose demand serious scrutiny.
I believe it is important to understand the meaning of transform. When you effect change you make something or someone different. When you transform you change someone or something dramatically or completely.
The definition of fundamental is, "Relating to or affecting the underlying principles or structure of something." The definition is so significant I will write it again, "Relating to or affecting the underlying principles or structure of something." The fundamentals of math, addition and subtraction. The fundamentals of language; phonetics and grammar, not to tough so far. Actually, it doesn't matter what you apply the word "fundamental" too, the definition doesn't change. The word "Fundamental" continues to be defined as "relating to or affecting the underlying principles or structure of something." How about the fundamentals of the U.S. Constitution? The underlying principles of the Constitution are federalism, limited government, separation of powers, judicial review, liberty, individual freedoms and checks and balances. Finally, what is the fundamental foundation of our great nation? In case the answer doesn't fly off your tongue before you finish this sentence, it is the Constitution. A document that plays a role in virtually every aspect of life in the United States. Once again, in case you missed it. The fundamental foundation of America, the underlying principles or structure of the greatest nation in the history of the free world is the U.S. Constitution.
Change the Constitution
In order to fundamentally transform the United States of America one must transform the constitution or deem it a dynamic document that must be altered continuesly to meet the needs of the present day. One can no longer adhere to the timeless principles set forth by our founding fathers, the same principles that allowed for the birth of a great nation and that many Americans throughout our history have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve.

Obama and others before him have committed our children to a life of government servitude through a massive accumulation of debt. Our current interest payment on the national debt is in excess of 300 billion annually. By 2019 the interest payment is estimated to increase to over 800 billion annually. This debt is owned largely by other countries and corporations which in turn effect the politics and direction of our elected officials. As a result, when the promise of "fundamental change" is made it is made often by proxy of those without the best interests of the United States in mind.
Hang together or Hang Seperately
Common sense should dictate that most Americans would not support ANY fundamental change to our nation. I fear however that the attempts will be covert. Politicians keep us occupied with divisive debates over abortion, gun control, health care and global warming, While they pass legislation to increase taxes, increase the control of the federal government, increase the national debt with witless causes and entitlements and bills that continue to infringe on our liberties. A nation divided is easily conquered, this time from within. We must in order to persevere, release our commitment to political parties and platforms and return to the fundamental principles our nation was founded upon. Those same principles that manifest our liberties in the Constitution, the same principles that the current president has vowed to transform.
In the words of Thomas Payne "If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately."
We are living in historic times, times which will define the essence of America. We must confront those that stand to fundamentally transform our nation, we must continue to resist government acquisition of the free market through bailouts, health care reform, stimulus and cap and trade just to mention a few. We must crack the shell of corruption that surrounds the seeds liberty which were sown upon fertile ground to grow a great nation over 200 years ago and allow those same seeds to once again sow the field of prosperity and liberty. Those seeds, the Constitution, they are the structure, they are the founding principles and they are our future.

Great hub. Very well presented, your conclusions are dead on accurate. The word "Transform" as used in his speech was deceptively integrated to elude too the electoral popular term "political change." Its real meaning is as you describe, however I offer a more commonly understood analogy as definition. As a caterpillar "transforms" into a butterfly, or the Ugly Duckling changing into a Swan; each indicating unsightliness “transformed” into beauty.
This code word, deliberately employed during the October speech, proves Mr. Obama not to be a liar, fore he advised us all of his intentions, but a deceiver. He knowingly lead his constituency, perhaps an under sophisticated one, to believe its implied meaning rather than explain the true agenda. Many of us saw through this ploy, but interestingly the majority of the “educated” media “missed” it and espoused his candidacy, and now his Administration to the populace.
Even more of us now see the “transformation” intended is the magnificence in our form of government as written by the Founding Fathers, into the ugliness of an overbearing government controlled society. The Framers foresaw the potential for this abomination and specifically worded the Constitution to permanently prevent such a premeditated attack on the rights and liberties of the citizenry.

When I heard President Obama utter those words about "fundamentally" changing our nation a cold chill ran down my spine. Apparently, I was right to be afraid given the present state of affairs.
