Fundamentalism – our Nation’s most dangerous “ism”

Hurling Incendiary "isms"
There are many people currently spewing accusations at those they consider “enemies of the state,” by using “isms” that elicit fear, anger, and righteous indignation. I’m afraid rhetoric in the form of hate speech is a prelude to violent actions—I’ve lived to see the assassinations of President Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., and have seen the ugly consequences of hate speech. Those in power know the buttons to push to divide and conquer people and motivate them to act against their own best interests so they become pawns in a game that keeps the establishment in control of the money and resources. The adage, “Just follow the money,” explains all.
These “isms” create a frenzy of hate and fear. Those leveling these accusations, both unintentionally and intentionally, create a social climate of division while claiming to be on the right side of history, true Americans, real Christians, or simply righteous people exercising their sacred (often referred to as “God-given) First Amendment rights.
#1 Racism as defined in Wikipedia is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and those racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. In the case of institutional racism, certain racial groups may be denied rights or benefits, or get preferential treatment.
Is Obama a racist?
Okay, with everyone calling everyone else a racist, will the real racists please stand up? I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon. I believe we all have hints of racism or judgments about groups of people, but what matters is do we actually attempt to take away or deny others the same rights we have on the basis of race? We have Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, and others calling Obama a racist. I just don’t get this one. Has Obama tried to pass legislation denying anyone of any race equal rights or protection under the law? Has he spoken disparagingly about any racial or ethnic group? Obama is not white or back—he's bi-racial, and if you’ve read his autobiography Dreams from my Father, you grasp his struggle to embrace his multicultural roots, to form a personal identity that integrates his blackness and whiteness. It is evident Obama loves both sides of his family, including his half sister whose father is Asian. Those calling Obama racist never site reasonable examples to support this fantasy—they pulled it from the air, or from some other place I prefer not to name, as that would be bad manners.

Is Obama Hitler or just the anti-Christ?
#2 Nazism as defined in Wikipedia is officially known in Germany as National Socialism. It is the totalitarian ideology and practices of the Nazi Party or National Socialist German Workers’ Party under Adolf Hitler, and the policies adopted by the dictatorial government of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945.
Does wanting health care reform make you a Nazi?
When Glen Beck and his followers call Obama and anyone who wants health care reform, Nazis, and compare Obama to Hitler, I simply don’t get the metaphor. For one thing, Nazism stood for a belief in the superiority of the Aryan race, or the true German people, and committed itself to destroying Jews, people of color, and anyone they deemed racially impure. As addressed above, there is no evidence Obama is a racial purest. Being bi-racial, that would be hard for Obama to pull off. Hitler was responsible for murdering six million Jews, invading numerous countries, and trying to achieve world domination. I don’t see the connection between those heinous acts and trying to get decent affordable health care for Americans. Do these same name-callers consider the leaders in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia, Japan, and other western countries and all who support and benefit from national health care plans, Nazis?
Guantanamo Bay Naval Base – 21th Century Concentration Camp
The Nazi party stripped people of habeas corpus, arrested and detained anyone anytime at will, practiced torture of its opposition, and controlled all aspects of society—the press, the arts, education, industry, the military, etc. Now, many of the same Right Wingers who accuse Obama and the left wing liberals of being Nazis supported the Bush/Cheney administration that created GITMO (the concentration camp where people labeled terrorists have been denied legal recourse.) We were told its okay to detain unlawful combatants or unprivileged combatants or belligerent civilians who directly engaged in armed conflict in violation of International Humanitarian Law, indefinately without charging them—they have no rights under the law. To question this practice is un-American or seen as siding with the terrorists. Here is the dangerous Catch 22. This gives the military complete control over the process of arresting, detaining, and sentencing people deemed unlawful combatants without any legal checks and balances. This is chilling in its similarity to the tactics practice by Nazis in World War II. It means we have given the military the right to arrest and even torture on mere assumption of guilt. Of course, when Obama promised to close GITMO, he was called naïve and accused of putting us at risk and making the world dangerous--he was accused of being un-American and siding with terrorists.
The Patriot Act – designed to deter and punish American terrorists
The very thought makes me nervous. The Right has been big supporters of The Patriot Act that gives law enforcement rights to arrest anyone suspected of being or supporting terrorists without just cause. There have been so many hideous abuses of The Patriot Act, including: government insisting public libraries turn over their records to monitor the public’s reading material, wiretapping of news-media outlets and civilians without warrants, arresting of innocent civilians on mere suspicion—this could fill up 20 hubs! This reminds me of the political climate in Germany during World War II. It means the government has the right to pick you up off the street whenever it feels like it—they just have to say they have reason to believe you may have terrorist intentions. I love the arguments offered by those who think this is perfectly acceptable because if you have nothing to hide, you should be perfectly okay with giving over your civil rights to the government. Such justification for real totalitarian tactics is Orwellian.
#3 Socialism as defined by Wikipedia - Most socialists share the view that capitalism unfairly concentrates power and wealth among a small segment of society that controls capital and derives its wealth through exploitation, creates an unequal society, does not provide equal opportunities for everyone to maximize their potentialities, and does not utilize technology and resources to their maximum potential nor in the interests of the public.
Hum…given the recent tax payer bailouts of Wall Street, companies too big too fail, the financial industry, the health care industry, the insurance companies, it sounds like the Socialists make some good points. However, Obama and the Democrats in Congress and most left wing Americans, aren’t Socialists in the way the Right accuses them. This was demonstrated by the government's willingness to bail out the big players in order to keep capitalism from being flushed instantly down the toilet. Obama is all for a healthy American economy that gives people incentives to climb the ladder, get out of poverty, and keep buying stuff like cars, houses, cable T.V., fast food, junk that falls apart, and all the good stuff like washing machines and dryers, blue jeans, pet clothing, and other necessities. But those of us on the left, and plenty of sane people of all persuasions, just want decent health care and a fair shot at the American dream that is being eroded by the greedy emperors that rule the United States of Corporations.
A very dangerous “ism”
Fundamentalism as defined in Wikipedia refers to a belief in a strict adherence to a set of basic principles (often religious in nature), sometimes as a reaction to perceived doctrinal compromises with modern social and political life.
Are we really one nation under God with liberty and justice for all?
I believe fundamentalism stems from the inability of people to think metaphorically. For example, there is Christian Fundamentalism, a religion where the Bible is taken literally, and therefore, Noah did indeed build an ark, and miraculously managed to take two animals, two insects, two birds, and two of every possible life form upon the ark to save them from the flood. Okay, we have freedom of religion, thank god, in the United States of America (sort of), and we are free to believe in the tooth fairy if we choose—I only ask believers to keep their religion in the appropriate sphere and not in public schools, not in front of public court houses (such as tablets of the Ten Commandments), and out of the government. Please stop calling this a Christian nation—we are a nation of all religions, including lots of atheists and agnostics. And, please don’t use your religion to make up laws that take away the civil rights of others who do not share your religious views—such as denying the rights of Gays to marry and serve in the military if they come out of the closet. Not everyone believes as you do, that homosexuality is a sin. No one is forcing you to be Gay. Learn to live and let life.
Is Jesus the only way?
Not everyone believes that Jesus Christ is the only savior and the only path to God, and that if you are a non-believer you are going to hell. Some people are by nature more eclectic and like to think all of the teachers had something good to say. Some people like to think of all Gods as essentially the same God (kind of like wearing different costumes) who has taken lots of different forms at different times in history to help people learn how to be kinder to their fellow man. Some people look at spiritual writings, such as the Bible more metaphorically, like stories that teach lessons or share insight rather than literal occurrences. And, some people do believe in science and the importance of teaching science to children in schools even if it conflicts with your religious beliefs—remember we do have separation of church and state in this country. And some people don’t like religion at all or aren’t sure if there is a God—is that really such a sin?
I'm certainly not saying Christians are the only group with fundamentalists. There are fundamentalists in all religions and in all political movements and they are usually very intent on fighting with those who don’t think like they do, and seem willing to throw someone under a bus if scripture or their dogma authorizes them to do so. They seem more attached to the word of God in their scripture than to peace, tolerance, compassion, and the very values their religions are supposed to preach.

Thanks Patrice for leaving a comment - I'm floored those who call Obama these names, supported Bush and all of the policies he put in place that eroded our freedoms - oh I forgot to mention - he declared war on a country that hadn't attacked or threatened us. Crazy times!
An excellent hub. I think extreme thought in any field is dangerous. I'm also seeing this fundamentalism applied to politics in general, and it is frustrating progress immensely. As always, your point is well made and I hope it sees some traffic, giving food for thought to everyone.
After seeing the word "spew" in the opening sentence I knew where this was going. How convenient of you to overlook the use of the word Nazi by a Democratic leader in Congress.
"he (Bush) declared war on a country that hadn't attacked or threatened us. Crazy times!"
Let us also overlook the troops sent by President Bill Clinton to Kosovo, Haiti, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Bosnia. He also approved numerous bombing runs over Iraq when he was Commander in Chief. None those countries attacked or threatened us either.
Progressives have such a short and convenient memory.
Well said, Kartika. An ism, being a system, can take the guess work out of forming opinions and making decisions, because doctrine and rules are in place to do the thinking for you. Whether the ism breeds incendiary language and action at one extreme, or peaceful coexistence at the other, it removes, to one degree or another, an individual's responsibility to think and act through deliberation.
A quite provocative Hub. Thumbs up.
Thanks everyone for your comments -
lmmartin, you are so right extending the fundamentalist concept to political groups, and I think to all social movements - all groups have extreme fundamentalist participants - I added something to that effect in the hub as a result of your comment.
Nicomp - I'm saying we did not need to go to war with Irag as they posed no direct threat to us - they did, of course, have an "evil dictator," but that is not a legal reason for us to invade other countries or we would be invading countries now all over the globe. I don't think should be involved in Afghanistan either doing what we are doing - I have grave concerns regarding that issue, as well, and I don't think the left, Democrats, or Democratic presidents are always right, by any means. I'm talking about what I see as the current climate of right wing extremist thinking that, for example, thinks addressing our health care crisis is somehow un-American or socialist, and those who support such change are like Nazi's. Also, you might want to look at our involvement in Kosovo, Haiti, Somalia, Bosni as NATO operations to stop the genocide, allow refugees to return to their homes, and then leave. They are different scenarios all together.
Sally, its true all the isms trap us to think in a specific doctrine - whether violent or peaceful - and, I don't think any of us can be free of that reality - we can only try to stay alert to our own indoctrination!
nicomp, Newspaper and journal headlines nationwide have reported on the record profits of a number of large health insurance companies in the past few years. The CEO of United Health Care (reportedly America's largest health insurance company) personally earned more than $90 million in 2003 and more than $120 million in 2004 in salary and incentives. Other company executives also received multimillion dollar packages. I just think we can do much better!
United Health Care is a private business. If you disapprove of their salary structure, don't patronize them. Start your own insurance company or purchase coverage from a competitor. Purchase one share of United Health Care stock, go to the shareholder's meeting, put forward an initiative to cut the CEO salary.
The company has 75,000 full time employees. Are they overpaid as well?
According to http://finance.yahoo.com/q/pr?s=UNH, the CEO was paid $3.12M in 2008 and exercised $6.23M in stock options. That should please you, given that he's seen a 90% pay cut since 2004. If your numbers are correct, anyway.
Would confiscating his entire salary make any dent whatsoever in the supposed "health care crisis"? Absolutely not.
We have the freedom to spend where we want to spend and compete where we want to compete.
Your points are well taken kartika. You've even got a fundamentalist here raising sand with you.
All the isms are dangerous when they are taken to the fundamentalist extreme. Some isms, like capitalism, have essential, fatal flaws built in. Others, though based on more humanistic principles, are still subject to the abuse of corrupt and predatory people.
Much of the public, like the attacker above, has been successfully indoctrinated into the for-profit system of consumer delirium. They are as blindly faithful, regardless of the reality on the ground, as any muslim jihadist or christian crusader. They have fallen prey to the divide and conquer strategy that always seems to work for the parasitic elite. While the bankers and korporatists, who own the government outright, left, right and center, continue to funnel all the wealth upward into an ever smaller group of individuals, these trained performers waste their time and energy spewing vitriol at anyone who has anything to say that might actually help.
They will mindlessly defend those who are acting against their best interest and support a system that, during the Bush years, moved closer to fascism than ever before in our history. They can no more be reasoned with than a fence post. Don't waste your time trying.
As far as the name calling being used by the extreme right, it's a perfect example of the pot calling the kettle black.
What we now are witnessing is a flock of kapitalist vultures, who honor no law, are loyal to no nation and worship only the gods money and power, picking over the corpse of America for the last few scraps of edible flesh remaining.
When they're done, they'll continue feasting on the rest of the world.
We don't care what the "left" believes. Tackle the following if you can...LOL.
I am a Christian and proud to be an "Evil right-wing extremist" after all we are responsible for most of the violent crime in the United states. I am facetious and the left is far from being the brightest "bulb" on the human "tree."
Bring raw numbers to your arguments and you will have become closer to having actually defended any given argument. *By the way we really don't care who the left is banging.
Only in America can a person legally break into another person's home and if wounded by the *homeowner, sue the *homeowner and win. *****How is all of this made possible? The mindset of the left.
Hey Tackle This -- not true. In Canada if someone breaks into your home and you hurt them -- you will face criminal charges, as well as get sued.
CWB, I think you raise an excellent point about how people are indoctrinated into beliefs about the "for profit" health care model. For some reason, profit in this industry is being equated with freedom, the American way, good Capitalism, Democracy, etc. No matter how unfair the practices, how outlandish the salaries of CEOs, how many suffer under this system that is not working, this group continues to support it zealously - as if they are defending a sacred moral principal and not a corrupted corporate entity that will not be there to support them.
Tackle this - what would Jesus say about health care?
lmmartin, I just love the way you keep us in the loop on Canada's best practices! I still have fantasies every now and then about what if would have been like to have been born and raised in Canada, the United Kingdom, or one of those socialist countries where people don't have to go bankrupt to get health care! Oh well, I guess suffering builds character! lol!
I still think we should offer a gun with a laser sight to every law-abiding citizen...thugs will always get their guns
Tackle this: Yes, they usually get them from gun owners, and often use them on their previous owners. I'm not against hunting, but anyone who needs an AK-47 to hunt game with is dangerous to society.
I enjoyed your hub however I feel racism is our most dangerous ism because it divides, embarasses, isolates, hurts, and eventually without realizing what we have done--no-one is left because the human race failed to realize we are all the same--human and cutural isms separate one being 'fundamentalism' the other' racism' . . .
Come together humans for we are the only RACE on this planet ! Also can we avoid labeling ourselves as 'right-wingers', 'leftists', just stop with the dividing words in our language !

I like the P.E.T.E. tee ! Cool site from Tackle This hubber Great idea
I love it when Progressives/Liberals/Democrats use terms like "indoctrinate" and "kapitalist vultures". What a hoot. We are so very lucky to have these people around so we can be told what's best for ourselves. Where would we be if we had to think for ourselves? Oh my!
"Just give up a *little* more freedom! It's for the common good and we won't ask for any more. Honest!"
Hi Enlightened, no doubt racism is a huge problem - but, all the isms have serious downsides. And yes labels can be a problem because they generalize, they lump people together and no one is just a label - we are more complex than that. However, at the same time the labels do define groups of people who have similar beliefs, world views, and ideologies. There is a real difference between people who are for health care reform and who are against it, for example, and the "left" and "right" have opposing views on most issues, it seems.
Nicomp, I think words like "indoctinate" and so forth are used on both sides - the left has no monopoly on name calling - consider, "Hitler" "Nazi" "socialist"
People who make millions off of the working and middle class by exploitation of others is predatory, thus, CWB uses the word vultures. I have no problem with the description, because I see those with the most power in the world, and big corporate rules the world, as being predatory--continuing to destroy the environment, pollute, exploit workers, etc. as long as they can profit. Life is should be about more than making profit and it's not enough to to work for profit only - humans have a moral responsibility to consider the impact of their actions on other people and the environment - in my humble opinion.
kartika, nicomp has decided to plague you with obnoxious comments in hopes of wasting your time and creating discord.
This is someone who is beyond reason. Don't waste your time.
Great Hub - thanks for sharing. Most "-isms" are dangerous and ideology of left or right enslaves. Thanks for putting this so clearly.
Respect and understanding are the greatest requirements in overcoming the hatreds and suspicions caused by indoctrination and the slavish following of profits. Greed and incomprehension are the real enemies and should be exposed by clear thinking and writing as you have done here.
Love and peace
Tony
Hi Kartika,
Regarding the comment on the use of guns - we had a farmer in the UK who went to jail for five years for shooting a burglar; it wasn’t a life threatening wound. ‘Reasonable force’ is what the legal people look at when we retaliate against crime in the UK.
But I believe that health and happiness are our most valuable assets in life; I have no fear of these disappearing into a burglar’s swag bag. We’re more likely to loose them, when we misconstrue the fundamentals, for a decent sort of society.
Great hub and great points. The only thing I would add is extreme patriotism/nationalism, which in America seems to be the partner of fundamentalism and makes for a fairly scary combination. Pride in your country is one thing, but many take it too far and think it justifies anything, war crimes and torture included.
Today I learned of an American movement based on Psalm 109:8 which rings of fundamentalism to a dangerous degree. It is one thing to wish a Republican had been elected to manage the mess we are facing. It is completely another to wish the current elected President dead. This is a heinous response akin to anything the Taliban threatens or worse. Please read http://blog.beliefnet.com/progressiverevival/2009/ for more information on this extremism occuring in our own country.
Thanks, Storytellerus - I looked at this and it is truly horrific! I think now the worst of human nature is raising its head.
Pseudonymous, I couldn't agree more! Patriotism and Nationalism - that actually produces some very scary ism's!
Thanks for your comment!
amillar - I think the UK has a much saner attitude toward guns that we do in the U.S. And also, regarding health care! Thanks for weighing in!
I agree, too many "isms." Reminds me of the movies "You can't take it with you" and the sayings of Will Roger.
Oh, I say a m elderly woman plow though a bagel store with the lic plate "Ps 109 8"

You said it so much better than I could have. Bush's administration certainly behaved in such away that it could have definitely been compared to communism, but yet the minute Obama gets into office, he is called a communist for absolutely no legitimate reason.
Great hub!
