Down through the centuries golf as become the most personally challenging game involving the largest number of players throughout the world. This is partly because those who pursue the game of golf except frustration as part of the challenge and fun of playing the sport.

Because of the dedication of so many people to the game that is loved so much, golf continues to command the attention of those players still searching for numerous ways to reduce the frustration and increase the pleasure of golf.

Consequently, hundreds, if not thousands of books and magazines have been published toward this end. Regardless of how many books are read, and how much time and effort is spent on behalf of pleasure-seeking golfers, problems will always occur. Interestingly enough, that is part of golf's fascination.

Everything Comes Back To The Golf Swing

Nothing is more gratifying for established golfers than to have a sound golf swing and to be able to keep the swing intact through adjustments or corrections. It is a continually self-rewarding experience. The golf swing, however, is as unpredictable as the weather and as capricious as the wind. It is not uncommon in golf for even the best of professional players to sense that their swing "has a mind of its own".

Understanding the golf swing, which admittedly takes a lot of time and effort, will help you overcome most problems in golf by either preventing them or correcting the issues. In the beginning, you prevent problems by using basic fundamentals to develop a sound, consecutive swing, and you correct further problems by using fundamentals to adjust or correct very specific parts of your swing that relate to these problem areas.

Because of the complexity of the swing and it's somewhat capricious nature, not even experienced professional golf players are able to find and correct recurrent problems in golf, and they have long since learned that the problems must be corrected because the swing cannot be forced to conform.

Forcing conformity and into the swing simply turns on its rebellious nature and the more insistent that the golfer is, the more rebellious swing becomes. When chronic problems do occur and cannot be resolved in practice, it is truly the mark of an expert player to accept limitations and know when to call for help.

Yes, even professional players seek professional help. The reason is because it is far easier to see a flaw than to actually feel one in the swing. And when it comes to average golfers like you and I, specifically those who have built their swing upon the basics, should be just as selective as professionals in seeking professional help. Always select professional instructors who have also built their knowledge on the use of the basics in golf.

Although understanding the golf swing makes it possible to prevent or correct recurrent problems, two factors still make it difficult to prove beyond a certain point:

1. First, most golfers are unable to determine what constitutes a specific problem to begin with. I have played with friends who lived with problem areas within their swing for years before they realized what was going wrong.

2. And second, very few golfers have an understanding of what the underlying problems are that cause additional problems in their game.

Between obvious and underlying golf swing problems, the latter of the two are more troublesome because they are often very small, insignificant issues, that can cause more severe problems that are often overlooked.

Topping the ball, for example, may obviously be caused by the weight of the player shifting to the right rather than the left through impact. But the underlying cause may be a fast backswing, which prevents you from being able to drift your weight correctly. Such factors are rarely, if ever corrected, because they are not generally recognized as causes.

The Same Swing Problem Between 100 Golfers May Need 100 Different Solutions

So many things - timing and rhythm, movements and positions, practice and dedication, attitude and experience, mental and physical ability - all influence the outcome of the golf swing, so much that you can't expect the cause of a problem (such as slicing) to be exactly the same from one golf player to another. Nor can a seemingly identical problem always be corrected with the same simple solution.

Every factor involved in golf affects each golf swing differently. And there may be one or several reasons for any poor outcomes. Understanding the problems in knowing which fundamental (or a combination of fundamentals) will correct that particular problem, in that particular golf swing, and at that particular moment, is essential for both correction as a teacher and self-improvement is a golfer.

2 Final Tips

Two other things are important to remember about correcting your golf swing: First, preventing problems is still the best solution. And second, it is important to know what is right, as well as what is wrong.

Simply going back to the basics by following a step-by-step procedure for rebuilding your swing, without in-depth analysis, will gradually fix a major problem. And knowing what is right, as well as what is wrong, and looking for solutions, will simply eliminate factors that do not relate.
