The word hymn derives from greek word, (hymnos), "a song of praise". Collections of hymns are known as a hymnal or hymnbooks.

Hymns are a popular choice of music for funerals because it includes words of encouragement and hope for the bereaving family members and friends. Yes, your right, hymns are not written specifically for funerals. Hymns contain very powerful words of wisdom, hope and encouragement. Because of this, I believe they were incorporated and used within funeral memorial services to comfort bereaving families.

Personally, I listen to hymns outside a memorial service as well. My favorites provide strength to my soul especially when I am feeling weary from life's disappointments.
