I saw some identity badges (ID badges) on an online shop that sells them and realised how much comical value they have. The nature of the ID card picture means that a person's face is quite close to the camera which means that their face takes up most of the picture which, on it's own, can be quite a funny image.

Another reason I think ID badge pictures are amusing is due to the fact that 99% of people that have one taken are in an uncomfortable situation. There might be people behind the camera staring at them having their picture taken which leads to tension in a person's face.They may also be dealing with a photographer who is in a bad mood and so is directing them and making them feel uncomfortable. Have you ever felt happy being told what to do and how to look in a public environment?!

Lastly, in most ID badges, the person having their picture taken is not allowed to smile which means they are not only trying not to smile, they are also trying to appear neutral which for most people is very difficult. They often come across as trying too hard which I usually find pretty funny!

A classc comedy ID badge is from Superbad. If you've seen the movie you will know which one I am talking about. McLovin's ID badge of course! It's a classic example of a photo that's too close to a person's face, has next to no lighting the person having their picture taken has next to no expression. Something which I find highly amusing!
