Fur and fur trade is very much frowned upon, today.
Since prehistoric time animals were killed for their fur and meat. They were only killed as needed. Therefore, there were no reduction in numbers. The harm and distraction came in when civilization developed and the furs were worn more for luxury than necessity. At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century fur coats were worn more and more and the demand was growing.
The fur trade was already part of the Roman Empire's economy.
Russia was the main supplier to Western Europe. It developed a trade in the early Middle Ages. First by ships through the Baltic and Black Sea then by railway the Leipzig, Germany. The export was of raw furs of belts of martens, beavers, wolves, foxes, squirrels and hares.
Between 16th and 18th century Russia opened up Siberia and exported from there Arctic Fox, Lynx, Sable, Sea Otters and stout (ermine).
The fur trade reached its height from the 17th century and early 19th century. The USA and Canada were the biggest producers. Agents of British owned Hudson's Bay and American Fur companies had a fantastic trade. Between 1853 and 1877 the Hudson's Bay Company sold more than 3 million skins.
As always there is also a good side from the fur trade. Fur trappers opened many wilderness area in Siberia and North America
The high turnover of business brought many animals closed to extinction.
Today the main producers of furs are the USA, southern Canada and the Scandinavian countries. Many species have become endangered. The USA and Britain have banned the import and sale of pelts from tigers, polar bears and jaguars.
1980 Protests and demonstrations from animal rights groups led to banning further import and sale.The manufacture and use of synthetic furs becomes more popular.
