Fibromyalgia
74What is Fibromyalgia ?
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome with many symptoms. The three primary symptoms are chronic pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances. There are numerous other associated ailments which are usually referred to as secondary symptoms.
Primary Symptoms :
CHRONIC PAIN : All fybromyalgia patients suffer from chronic pain which presents on specific and well defined areas of the body. The pain extends from the muscles of the neck, shoulders, arms down through the muscles of the pelvis to the knees and is deeply rooted in the soft tissues of the muscles surrounding the joints (as opposed to arthritis that affects the joints). This is a non-inflammatory pain and is not degenerative.
CHRONIC FATIGUE : The fatigue caused by fybromyalgia is characterised by sluggishness as a result of physical exertion, of prolonged intellectual work or by the onset of sudden weakness with no apparent cause. It is intensified by a lack of sleep and by prolonged or consecutive stressful situations. Chronic fatigue is experienced by all fybromyalgia sufferers and the symptoms may continue for several days, weeks or even months. It has a significant affect on the daily activities and quality of life of fybromyalgics.
CAUTION : it is important to distinguish between chronic fatigue associated with fybromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. These are two separate syndromes which are closely related and often difficult to differentiate. One doctor may diagnose chronic fatigue and another may diagnose fybromyalgia in the same patient. You must discuss either diagnosis because it is vital that the cause of your fatigue is identified. Note that you cannot have fybromyalgia without chronic fatigue - but you can have chronic fatigue and not suffer from fybromyalgia.
SLEEP DISTURBANCES : Characterised by difficulty in falling asleep, frequent waking up and loss of deep sleep. These sleep problems cause chronic stiffness and sluggishness. In healthy sleep the essential deep sleep phase restores the forces necessary to balance the body. In fybromyalgia, the frequency of alpha waves caused by the sleep disturbances are abnormally high in comparison with the essential delta waves of deep sleep. This anomaly results in a state of light sleep which in turn deprives the body of essential rest.

Secondary Symptoms
A fibromyalgia sufferer may suffer from one, some or all of the following secondary symptoms in varying degees from mild to severe :
- allergies
- carpel tunnel syndrome
- irritable bowel (alternating diarrhea and constipation)
- cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) or bladder irritability
- depression (mild to severe, often proportional to the intensity of pain)
- numbness and tingling
- sore throat (hoarseness or difficulty swallowing)
- headache (migraine or tension)
- loss of cognition( memory disorders)
- gastro-oesophageal reflux (heartburn)
- PMS
- dry eyes, dry mouth (associated to Sjörgen's Syndrome)
- thyroid problems (hypothyroidism, thyroiditis)

It is important to note that fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion. Before confirming a diagnosis it is necessary to carry out tests to exclude other diseases that may present similar symptoms.

Hi EYEAM4ANARCHY - great question - I shall have to add a capsule about this to my hub. As far as I know both genders can suffer - but it presents differently. there's more here : http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/sleep-disorders/arch
I shall do some research and write my own piece about FM and gender. Thanks for the idea ! I added a link to your sciatica hub from my FM hub - my first link to another hub - i keep finding cool, easy-to-use features on HubPages.
I'll put a link to your sciatica Hub on my new blog later today / http://iphigenia.synthasite.com/
Hi I got curious about this disease when you mentioned you developed fibromyalgia through a trauma due to accident. Gee...I wish there is something I could do to help. May I ask? What is the symptoms that is causing you a lot of pain or gives you a lot of trouble? Praying for you...
Hi ripplemaker and thanks for your interest and concern. My main symptoms are joint pain, occasional sleep disorders, chronic headaches about every 6 - 8 weeks, mild irritable bowel about once a week, and sometimes I can't think too well !
Initially I was treated for arthritis - but there were too many other symptoms and the x-rays showed just a wee bit of arthritis at the top of my spine.
My case is quite a mild one - but still debilitating in that I never know from day to day if I'm going to have a "flare up". Which is why I've turned to working on line. I'm beginning to notice patterns and things which can cause a flare up. Damp weather is one !
good hub! yes damp weather does make it flare up easier... I suffer from Severe Fibromyalgia and CFS....Nice to see someone write a hub on this subject. =)
Thanks for sharing Iphigenia. I have to go to work in awhile so I'll be sending you loving and healing thoughts your way today! :-) I hope to be able to email you soon. Take care for now...
Thanks for the hub - good information - I have fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis and am still trying to figure out how to deal with both. I am going back to acupuncture to see if that helps (it has worked in the past). What has worked for you as far as dealing with flare ups? I'm sorry that you have to deal with fibromyalgia - its really a drag - I'll keep you in my prayers.
my mother had fibromyalgia and never realized her insomnia was due to it, her doctor was not very informative...i wonder if fibromyalgia is associated with post-polio syndrome? i will read more, hope you feel good soon, iphegenia
My son has this disease. He is miserable.
Hi James - pleased to meet you - and so sorry to hear about your son, I hope that he finds ways to cope with FM in his life. I never know when to expect a flare-up but I can go for up to 10 days without any symptom but fatigue so i think that I'm quite lucky. Some sufferers are in constant pain plus having many other of the symptoms.
Thanks for the informative hub. I have Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS), which is a connective tissue disorder, and fibromyalgia is very common amongst people with HMS, (not sure why, but possibly due to the trauma that HMS causes(?)). I've suspected for a while that I might have fibro as well as I have nearly all of the symptoms - although sometimes it's difficult to distinguish whether symptoms originate from connective tissue problems or from fibro causes, as they also overlap a great deal. I'm a little too fed up with doctors to get investigated further, but it's great that you've written a hub to increase awareness of this often hidden disease. Not enough people know about it or fully understand it.
Moon Daisy - so sorry to hear about your health problems. You are right about the confusion of symptoms in all these related syndromes. I hope that you have a doctor who is aware of these subtleties - that makes all the diffrence.

Good info. I've known several women who had Fybromyalgia. Is it exclusive to or more common among women? Also, is it more common after a certain age? Is there any sort of hereditary aspect?
