I am really happy with this news that google will have new g drive. Now I can go any where in world and access my files so easy and convenient.
No hassel to have your own PC just need web connection this is like the yahoo or gmail which we can access anywhere.
Another Google's Victory in this Internet wars:
This will give us a new way of storing info...
Google's new"GDrive," a service that would enable users to access their PCs from any web connection, could kill off the desktop computers.
The GDrive, by Google and long rumored, may finally launch this year, with some tech news sites calling it the "most anticipated Google product so far."
The Google drive would shift away from Microsoft Window's operating system, in favor of "cloud computing," where storage and processing is done in data centers. Users would no longer have to rely on their computers' powerful hard drives.
So what is cloud computing?
"Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualised resources are provided as a service over the Internet.Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them"
Home and businesses have already been turning toward Web-based services, such as e-mail - including popular services Hotmail and Gmail - and photo storage, such as Flickr and Picasa.
Users would no longer have to worry about their hard drives crashing, since data would be saved on the Web, and can be accessed from any machine.
With the GDrive, a PC would be a device acting as a portal to the Web, enabling users to think of their computer as software rather than hardware.
Google refused to confirm the GDrive, but acknowledged the growing demand for cloud computing.
"There's a clear direction ... away from people thinking, 'This is my PC, this is my hard drive,' to 'This is how I interact with information, this is how I interact with the web,'" Dave Armstrong, head of product and marketing for Google Enterprise, told the Observer.
The G Drive service will provide anyone a universally accessible network share that spans across computers, operating systems and even devices. Users will no longer require third party applications to emulate this behaviour by abusing Gmail storage.
Is this a good choice or not time will tell..
In Last decade, Google has taken over the vast majority of searches done by Internet users worldwide, released an IPO in 2004 which was offered at $85/share, a mark that has not been seen since that first day, and created numerous products that have helped bring in millions of dollars, including AdSense and Orkut. They also began a selection of offerings to the IT world which have been well received.
Google had a humble beginning in early 1996 when two PhD students from Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin began a research project trying to prove if looking at the ties that sites had to each other would produce a better search engine
Very Interesting facts about Google

This takes us one step closer to the global brain, the arrival of which Peter Russel predicts will coincide with 2012. At that point in time, he says, there will be as many individuals on the internet as there are neurons in the human brain.
A fanciful idea, no doubt, yet it's an exciting notion. With all our data on the 'cloud' we might just be able to use our brains alone for accessing the internet. Wouldn't that be a gas?
I look forward to such services and freedom, of course I think many of us will still be desk bound by our need for peripherals, like printers and scanners.
I use as many free services as possible to back up my photos music etc. across the web, so I almost already have thgis option.
The "gspace" addon to firefox allows you to this already via your gmail account storage...worth a look if you can wait for the official version.
good information to know now I won't have to worry about my computer crashing all the time,I keep saying something wrong with it everytime I take it back to best-buy but they keep saying there is nothing wrong with it
I read about this concept in an online article. The concept sounds good in the sense that you don't to buy a pc and can have access to your documents anywhere in the world anytime. My concern is with security. in this world of high tec hackers, how safe is sensitive data in a cloud out there, amongst other data with the rest of the worlds mish-mash of information. Great information.
As you've pointed out, with services like Flickr, etc., many of us have data stored places other than our hard drive. I, though, prefer still to have a PC or laptop within my reach at home. And I still like having certain things on my own hard drive. Good info!
I have been using gspace since long to store some of my documents. I am also using Live Drive (Livedrive.com) which is similar in concept of the GDrive. The security concerns are understandable but such devices do provide portability. Another advantage is that you don't have to worry about buying new hard disk when you run out of space. However if something happens to such storage, then you would have a problem.
G'day Lgali, sounds like a great concept. Is there any indication if there will be a fee?
Yep, Gdrive and a good flashdrive, will get you anywhere
This GDrive concept is revolutionary to say the least and troubling perhaps to lots of people who sell and maintain PCs. Think of all the computer stores that will close. Yikes!!!
I'm looking forward to it.
Makes me wonder how they will manage the vast array of programs people use, most of the processing power and space on my computer is taken up with running all the different programs I use. Personal data is probably only about a 1/5 of the space.
Very interesting hub - thank you. Google doing what it does best.
After having several computers blow up from lightening, I do back up some things online. Generally paying for space. I pay for outside space for my best photos- hoping to never lose them- the free sites make it too easy to clip and snip-= take and steal photos, on image event we can stop that. I also pay a site to store my poetry. When we went from dial up to satellite- blue sky- automatically put my email on the cloud.
Making me have to go online, wait -- password- it was a pain and took more time. After spending hours with tech on the phone, I finally managed to get my good ole outlook express back- and my email back on my main frame-. Personally I want my email private retrievable by me only, but all of it goes on the cloud anyway. I don’t need constant access to the computer, and if I travel- I am off line, it worries me so many people can’t live without being connected-= to the mainframe brain.
Every since I have been on satellite I feel nothing in my computer is private or safe. If we lose our PC we may as well forget privacy- it appears-IT'S lost anyway-= AND PEOPLE JUST FADE INTO IT! GREAT ARTICLE- WITH NEEDED INFO!
earnestshub -thanks for nice comments
vitaeb -thanks for comments U are right this will lead to a step closer to the global brain
Using internet connection to access my PC? I don't think that's safe.
Anyway, thanks for the info.
Don't see it happen any time soon :)
I would love to have this, so we don't have to carry our files everywhere in multiple computers. Thanks for the tip Lgali, look forward to it.
cgull8m -thanks for comments, I am also waiting for this to happen
sunforged -thanks for comments, I am also waiting for this to happen
Misha -thanks for comments
There is already so much access to our computers/telephones/email, etc. that the cloud couldn't add that much more to our lack of privacy. The NSA, according to recent news, already is monitoring everything about everyone already.
Good information.
jkfrancis -thanks for visting and commenting on my hub. U are right there is already so much access to our computers/telephones/email, etc.
what is NSA?
You would not believe how many old photos I have lost because of lightning killing my pcs. : ( I now put them all on photobucket for safe keeping. I wish I had known about photobucket earlier... or maybe it wasnt invented yet. lol... good post here. !!! Ty for the info
MellasViews -thanks for all comments. I think this is good option if it happen
cgull8m-thanks for all comments. I think this is good option if it happen
Good hub.
I think that cloud computing is an interesting concept, and with the development we've been seeing in recent years perhaps inevitable. I think that we will still have and use computers as we do today though, but maybe not as much.
Oh, and the NSA is the National Security Agency, an intelligence agency in the US that deals with information and signal surveillance type things.
Zabimaru-thanks for tthe comments I think this is good idea.
also thanks for NSA info
That was really useful. Thx

cgull8m -thanks for all comments u are right we don't have to carry our files everywhere in multiple PC...
I don't think this will move folks away from desktop pcs at all.
There are lots and lots of disadvantages to cloud computing. One being bandwidth. It's just not going to be viable for a while. And when it is there's the privacy issue. I dunno about anyone else but i put literally no private information on the internet in storage. Not ever it's simply not safe, no matter what security features google might have. It may just take one pissed off tech...maybe someone who had a bad day. Or maybe even someone curious, a voyeur.
Plus you still need the devices to get to your cloud computing center. Google would undoubtedly create a stripped down access device, but it would also undoubtedly not be as versatile. Can you play quake on a cloud? No. Can you burn a cd with a cloud device? No.
All this just IMO. Nice Hub.
Elijah Grant -thanks for your detail comments. I think you are a expert in this area, nice points
nice hub
People have been prediting the death of the PC since before there was a PC. Truth is that they're too useful to people and people like to have their personal information under their control. Or at least they like to think that they have control. Still Google Drive is a great way to backup information against the inevitable hard drive crash, I'm going to have to get a new one myself. I've been running a Western Digital for almost a decade now. I'm getting kinda worried. Still a new SATA 500 GB or 1 TB drive should be just about right. Great article Lgali.
