It is my theory that life is a true test. A test from a higher power, I do not know.
I walked out to check the mail today. As I was approaching, there was a man with a cane walking up the street towards me.
I have seen this man many times walking along the street. As I was about to head back from the mailbox, I decided to ask how he was doing today.
Man, did the story ever continue, or stop in this case! As we were talking, I cleared all judgement on this man and his appearance. Well it wasn't really "us" talking, it was more of "him" talking and "me" listening.
I debated on whether or not to let him be and go back inside or display humanity and humbleness and hear what he had to say.
I simply asked myself, if this man is a test of my humanity or a test of a higher power, "God", I will at least take a shot at the test. If I do not pass, at least I made an attempt.
I will say, it was quite hard to understand his words, yet his meaning was clear.
He told me numerous details of his personal life and personal struggles. Said he was receiving money from disability, yet he loaned it out and is again broke, yet he never asked me for a dime. Good thing because I didn't have a dime at the time. I learned about his family member Johnny with absolutely no warning. lol I still have no clue who Johnny is, yet I heard him out.
Granted I did mostly listening rather than talking, however he didn't give me much option! lol So what did I learn from listening to the disabled man?
I learned the ultimate which is humanity. In my perspective, everyone and every word counts.
The man was only disabled in his mind, not my mind. The man was a true warrior. A disabled man whom walks "miles" a day to his destination only seeking an ear to listen as he passes by. Would 10 minutes have been too much out of my day?
Hardly, I learned more from listening to this man that I learned through 4 years of high school.
When you wish to judge one or see yourself above them, remember that they could enlighten your mind to a completely different level. Lose your despicable arrogance in the quest of humbleness.
You walk above no one else. Their words could be your test of humanity, a test which I will refuse to fail.

Sounds more as if it was a gift to you than a test dear Sir - glad you decided to accept it :) Also very glad you seem to be a little more open to there being a "Higher Power"! that too is a gift... A+ :)
Thanks for reading. I believe it true that something new can be learned every day.
Thanks for reading Syl,
I have always been open to believing in a higher power, just not a forced one. Thank You
It's usually interesting to know what others are going through. Often times it's not what we might expect. I've always enjoyed the stories of making an extraordinary impact from so little time and effort. Thanks for sharing.
Wise words dave, Thank You for reading!
Nice hub, well done, it does not take much sometimes to cheer up someones day does it....
Not at all. Only takes an ear or two. Thanks for reading.
You said it all with these two statements,
"When you wish to judge one or see yourself above them, remember that they could enlighten your mind to a completely different level. Lose your despicable arrogance in the quest of humbleness.
You walk above no one else. Their words could be your test of humanity, a test which I will refuse to fail."
Great article---keep up the good work!
Hello Nancy, Thank You for reading, much appreciated.
Sometimes your time and a friendly ear is all that is needed to make someones day, OH and a smile.
Very true. Thank You for reading. I think part of things is realization of moment considering every moment can be learned from. It truly works wonders for others and yourself when you hear the others words without assumption or judgement.
I spent years travelling over our roads and highways. I picked up many strangers and learned quite a bit. many a time I felt that I had been visited by an angel in disguise too as they would just vanish before my eyes after letting them out of my truck. I have even given money to some to help them on their way. The rewards I have recieved from it far exceeded any output I had in it. One such you golden boy returned for a visit once I know he was an angel, but that's a story I will not tell.
The kindness you offer a stranger today you will see from another for yourself tomorrow. Your kindness in listening will be repaid someday.
Thank You for reading Ralwus, Advisor4qb.
Inspiring and thought provoking.
Thank You, Much appreciated, Laughing Mom
Wow, Yes God is real ! Your words make you stop and think. Just absorb and enjoy each moment of life.
Hello Teen, Glad you liked. Thank You for reading.
marine - really really great message. For my part I leave others to live their lives as they choose. My mum is horrendously judgemental and at times (in my life) she's sickened me with her attitude to others. Fortunately I'm now distanced from her.
I agree with your statement that we walk above no one. Who are we (really) to judge another?
A humbling, thought provoking read indeed.
Hello frogdropping, Thank You for reading. Much Appreciated
I will say this on the example of your mom. If she had not shown you an outside perspective of a person whom is judgemental, would you realize the importance of not being judgemental?
I can sit for hours and listen to the older folks speak..they often have the best of humor!
'Lose your despicable arrogance in the quest of humbleness.'
Great insight. This article made my day. I'm glad I didn't miss it; that would have been entirely my loss. A big thumbs up.
Hello anjalichugh, I glad you liked it.
Thank You for reading, Much Appreciated.
Marine, thanks for the reminder. I don't think of those encounters as tests though. I think of them as Guru's coming with a lesson. Just gotta remember to take the time to learn it.
-love and light
Hello Randy, Thanks for reading and commenting.
Very true
Thank You for reading Ethel.
I really enjoyed this story and the call to "God test" our intentions. So often we can change someone's life by paying attention...you may have changed his. When we take time with others we are blessed. Thanks for sharing this!
Hello k@ri, Thank You for reading.
I am glad you took the time to listen. You can learn a lot just by listening. Maybe some day you too will need to talk to someone, or just need a sympathetic ear. I've grown up to believe we reap what we sow.
"I've grown up to believe we reap what we sow."
I believe this as well as karma. Thanks for reading/commenting.
Nice! Some people would have found such an interaction to be just an inconsequential blip in their lives. Others, as you so aptly point out, would arrogantly consider such a transaction an interference in a more purposeful existance. I found myself impressed by your willingness to look for the God-Lesson in the exchange. The real gift. In so doing, you also gave a gift. I love that.
Thank You for reading Linda. I like to question reason and purpose while in a situation. I find it amusing rather than coincidence that we can meet and learn someone new at any given moment. I think there is reason if you consider every moment can be learned from.
Great Hub. Giving is an awesome thing. I wrote a hub news flash check it out if you get a minute. I believe there is no better way to get out of self then giving of oneself when in doubt or fear. It takes the focus off of me, self and I. Bless and be blessed. Keep on keeping on sister.
I am a new fan in your club. HP is wonderful.
In his name Blessings

Wow! That is a great story. I, too, engage strangers to... I don't know. I guess to learn perspective. It is rewarding.
