FRESH HERBS

Fresh herbs can make a good dish great. From fresh parsley with your spaghetti bolognese, to fresh basil on your homemade pizza.

First decide which herbs you want. If you’re lucky enough to have a large garden then you can have more herbs, but for many people limited space is an issue.
I find the nest way to decide is simply to choose the herbs you like and already use. Do you use dry basil? Or maybe you love oregano.

Herbs are available in many stores, though You want to start of with a healthy plant. So when buying make sure the leaves look crisp and not droopy and the colour is rich and green, stay away from yellow leafed plants. Moving and planting plants requires them to adjust to their new environment, the healthier the plant to begin with the quicker it will establish itself.

You can plant herbs successfully in a planter box as most herbs do not require a deep root system.

The herbs I planted in my first planter box were, Curly Leaf parsley and Italian Parsley, Basil, Oregono, Thyme and Chives.

Most herbs require soil to be kept damp, but make sure you have drainage if you are using a planter pot.

In the garden make sure you are planting your herbs in adequate sunlight, some require more sun than others.

Also try and space your plants according to the size they will grow to, herbs grow quickly and require room to grow, otherwise you may end up with faster growing herbs covering the slower growing herbs.

Depending on the quality of the soil you may want to include a slow release fertiliser sprinkled around your freshly planted herbs.

And most importantly enjoy your new herbs, not only do they taste great they’re extremely good for you.
