What is GSM?
GSM, a cellular network, stands for Global System for Mobile
communications and is a widely used cell phone technology worldwide. GSM uses
digital technology and is a second-generation (2G) cell phone system.
GSM mobile cell phones get connected by searching for cells in
the immediate vicinity.
There are five different cell sizes in a GSM network—macro cells, micro cells,
pico cells, femto cells and umbrella cells with a base station antenna in macro
cells.
GSM networks operate in a number of different frequencies ranging from 900 MHz
or 1800 MHz bands.
Why GSM?
There are a number of reasons why GSM technology is preferred over CDMA.
Following are some of the advantage of GSM Cell Phones:
1. GSM is much more advanced and reliable than CDMA. It transmits better
signals, hence better voice quality.
2. GSM offers the advantage of using SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards of
any career that the customer wishes to use. In CDMA cell phones, the SIM is
attached to the cell phone itself.
3. The SIM card used in a GSM cell phone can be used as a digital identity with
all kinds of data stored in it.
4. Easy exchange of contacts and other information from one phone to another.
5. GSM Global Network makes roaming around the world much easier without you
having to miss any of those important phone calls.
