Building Muscle Mass

The goal of most body builders is to build muscle mass, but in order to do that, you shouldn’t spend every waking moment in the gym. Building muscle mass requires you to train smarter, not harder! Here are the most common mistakes you should avoid when you are trying to work at building muscle mass:

Remember to Rest

You may see the same bodybuilders hitting the gym every single day, but professionals know that working out your entire body every day is a sure way to book a trip to the hospital. Professional bodybuilders might be at the gym regularly, but they work out a different set of muscles every day. Without rest, your muscles won’t grow and building muscles mass will be impossible.

How does this work? The basic principle behind building your muscles is repair. When you work out, you are breaking down the muscles you already have (and everyone has some muscles, no matter how little you currently work out). As you lift, the fibers in your muscles break—that’s the burn you feel after a good workout. Your muscles then need at least a day or two to rest and rebuild. Your body naturally will repair the muscles that were broken down and will make them a tiny bit stronger and a tiny bit bigger. Without rest, you won’t grow, building muscle mass just won’t happen, and you might injury yourself.

If You Want to Train for Endurance, Be a Runner

Bodybuilding is not about being fast and holding weight for long periods of time. It’s about building muscle mass, which makes you stronger. If you’re interested in endurance training, cardiovascular workouts might be a better option for you. Building muscle mass is not about endurance. Instead of using lighter weights and doing as many reps in a row as possible, use heavier weights and focus on short but controlled repetitions. You know a machine is set at the right weight when it is hard to lift, but you can control it for about ten reps without stopping. If you can go longer than that, increase your weight for the next set.

Work Out with a Partner

If you want to work at building muscle mass, you’ll need to increasingly up the amount of weight you are lifting. When you do that, large amount of weight become dangerous, especially if you’re really trying to intensify your workout. Building muscle mass I much safer if you work out with a partner. Find someone who is on about the same level as you are and can spot you when you’re lifting heavy free weights, like when bench pressing. A trainer works well for this as well. If you don’t have any bodybuilding friends, simple get to know the others who are bodybuilding at your gym and who are there at the same time of day as you. Offer to spot them if they’ll return the favor. In any case, work out with heavy free weights when there are others to help you if you are in danger. Never use dangerous free weights for building muscle mass when you are along.

Consider Your Diet

Building muscle mass requires more than hitting the gym a few times a week for intense training. You must also consider your diet if you want to see results. It requires you to keep a constant supply of protein in your diet, since protein is what builds muscles. If you don’t keep protein in your body, the body cannot rebuild muscle, and because it cannot be stored in the body like fat, building muscle mass requires you to eat smaller protein-rich meals every few hours.

If you work hard at putting together a good diet and exercise plan, building muscle mass is not difficult. It simply takes time. You need to be dedicated to the craft of bodybuilding and work hard to learn all you can about the sport.
