Old Etiquette in a Modern Society

Have you noticed the people around you getting colder and colder? Have you realized when you go to a public place rarely do you hear "excuse me" or "thank you". It's difficult to live in such fast-paced times. The world outside your home can be exhilarating yet frightening. The abundance of shoppers living in constant "survival mode" is hard to accept. It's frustrating to believe that any of the fellow consumers are human at all... until someone utters a phrase familiar to your ears. So incredibly soothing, a "oh, I'm sorry were you here first, you go ahead" or just "you're welcome" or "please".
Tips for Coping with Outside Negativity:
1 - Before you leave your house, make sure you have plenty of time. If you're rushed, you will soon turn into these grumpy shoppers which makes them grumpy with you. This will create a vicious cycle so please leave early.
2 - Make a list before you leave. Sometimes we get irritated when we're not sure where we're going in a store or what we really need.
3 - Absolutely breathe. Breathe the whole time you're at the store and driving. This will allow oxygen to your brain and allow you to think clearer without getting upset. You know, when you're angry, your intelligence actually drops? This makes you react to things you wouldn't normally.
4 - If you can do it, go on off-peak hours. A mall, or practically any place, will be crowded from 4 to 7 pm, especially on the weekends. Try going on a weekday and go around 3 or after 7:30.
5 - Have someone you completely love go with you. This does not necessarily mean your partner or your kids. This could be your best friend, your sibling, whoever. This way, if someone is rude to you, you can laugh it off. Also you won't have the constant question, "Can I get this??"
6 - If someone cuts in front of you while driving or pushing a cart, wish them a good day. I know it's tough! You don't have to say it outloud (in fact it might sound sarcastic if they're within hearing distance) but this should bring your mind to a more positive state.
7 - Smile. It takes less effort to smile than to frown and perhaps you'll get a sincere smile back.
8 - Be polite whenever possible. Sometimes others won't think positively until they get a genuine attitude thrust toward them.
9 - When driving use your signal and wave if someone lets you over. We all know how irritating it can be when someone doesn't use a signal and just expects you to let them over.
10 - If all else fails, shop at home. Sometimes the fight is just not worth fighting.
This was all from personal experience. As an avid shopper, it pains me to see people be so rude to each other when shopping should be an enjoyable experience. Recently I've noticed myself slumping into the mode of "get in, get out, stomp on anything that's in my way". This isn't how we should treat each other or even ourselves. We face so much negativity throughout the day, let's add a little fun and positivity when out with the general population.
