Gall Bladder Stone
Gall Bladder Stone

Gall bladder is a small pouch that stores bile. It is a pear shaped pouch that is located on the underside of the right portion of the liver. It can hold 45 milliliters of bile at a time. Gallstones are a hard object that forms in the gall bladder, cyctic duct, hepatic duct or bile duct (common bile duct). It is irregular in shape, and is usually about a size of a marble, and could be much larger. It varies in color from yellow, black or red.

Gallstone composed of calcium salt, phospholipids, lecithin, bilirubin (a pigment), bacteria and crystallized cholesterol. These products, with time, are filtered through the liver and accumulate in the gall bladder.

Gallstones can be diagnosed mainly by:

  • Ultrasonography - a use of high frequency sound waves that detect abnormalities inside the body.
  • Cholecystography - a use of X-ray after the patient swallowed a dye to outline the ducts and gall bladder.

Symptoms:

  • When one of the gall stones obstructs the bile ducts that go to the intestine, a sharp colic is produced starting in the upper part of the abdomen and extending toward the back. A person can also experience bloating and indigestion.
  • A person can experience jaundice, a yellowing of the skin resulting from an accumulation of bile in the blood.
  • Inflammation of the gall bladder, duct, pancreas and in severe cases cirrhosis.

Recommended Treatments:

  • Drink 3 tbsp of apple cider vinegar 3 times a day. You can dilute it in a glass of cold water and you can also put honey to taste.
  • Take a bath with cold water up to the waist and then alternate with warm water when the symptoms begin (colic). This will reduce abdominal inflammation.
  • Drink a lot of water with cranberry juice and / or aloe vera juice. This is good to reduce inflammation and will help expel the tiny stones toward the intestine.
  • Person prone to gallstone are advised to have a diet low in fat and cholesterol.
  • Eat food with a lot of fiber, fiber stimulate the digestive function and in turn produce more bile juice which help to remove the stones from the intestine.
  • Take lecithin, it is an important element to emulsify fats and cholesterol. Lecithin is like an organic soap that the body uses to dissolve fats on the liver. It also prevents stones from being formed in the gallbladder. Add 2 to 3 tsp of granulated lecithin on a cooked food, juices and salad. Do this for several days or until the stones are dislodged when you go to the bathroom. Lecithin will slowly begin to work dissolving the cholesterol stones. You may keep drinking this remedy for as long as needed. Drink a lot of pure water.

As an alternative treatment it is recommended:

  • It is recommended doing fasting for 4 days with carrot, pineapple or grapefruit juice. It has been shown that adding aloe vera increases the benefits (aloe vera contains many enzymes which help the digestive function normally performed by bile secretions).
  • On the fourth day of fasting at 7:00 pm, one should drink a cup of olive oil with a lot of lime juice. On the next day drink 4 tablespoons of castor oil. After this, begin to eat vegetables for several days increasing the amount little by little.
  • If pain last for more than 4 hours consult your doctor, because this could be another problem.

Medical Treatments :

  • Removal of gall stone. You will have to stay in the hospital for 1 week.
  • Laparoscope -an overnight stay in the hospital is recommended.
  • Cholecystectomy - a surgical removal of gallbladder.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy - gallbladder is removed by means of instrument inserted through a small incision in the abdomen.
  • Lithotripter -a device that produces shock waves that break stone into tiny fragments.

I just had my gallbladder removed. the surgeon recommended lapro, but had complications, come to find out, my gallbladder was one huge stone, and when they went in to remove it laproscopically, they tried to take my gallbladder out, and it ended up traring my artery to my liver....the transplant guys came and put me back together...Is this a normal thing? I mean, I didn't know this was a risk, i knew other organs were close by, but did not know, they could possibly tear my liver artery...please respond....

I once watched a health show and a health expert said that if you are diagnosed having some abnormalities in your body like lump or tumor, she said to try first all the alternative medicine that will naturally boost your weak immune system so it can fight those diseases/cancer cells. Surgical procedure should always be your last option, remember once your body has been opened and something has been changed there, there is always a risk that something will be damage there, maybe one organ can be fix but another will be affected and might weaken eventually. For those people who had already undergone surgical procedure then one thing you should do is try alternative medicine for maintenance, ask around for the best doctor who practices alternative medicine.

I did a gall bladder flush three times. The first time, I didn't get any stones. The second attempt produced a few. The third try produced about 30 or more small stones. I still experience back and shoulder pains once in a while. Does this mean I still have stones? What can I do?

hi LEN

its nice of you to write a health article. congrats

however oral cholecystogram is not used nowadays. nowadays we use hida or bulida scan

also there are many types of stones like

cholesterol stones

mixed stones and

pigmented stones

in some areas it is endemic to have gall stones

gall stones may be silent and need not undergo any form of surgery

only when there is pain or obstruction it needs to be operated

Khurram Aslam Mirza  says:

HI,

I was searching for treatment of gall bladder stones for my father, He is 72 years old. He had Bypass operation in year 2000. we live in Pakistan.

I am sorry this is long story, but I thought I must told you this story.

He had gall bladder pain long time ago I think in 1993, he was admitted in hospital for 2 or 3 days. After that he had this pain last year in Feburary 2007 and it was very serious pain, I took him to the hospital in emergency but the doctors thought that it was somthing else, but when the ultrasound was done then it was clear that it was gall bladder stone pain and the doctor gave him pain killing injaction for the gall bladder then in 30 minutes he felt better and we came home but the doctor said you should have it removed soon as possible.

My father felt better after that and he never went to remove it by operation. but now after exactly one year in feburary 2008 he had this pain again and it was as serious as before and again I took him to the other hospital, they took blood test, urine test, liver function test but the pain took its time and went away in few hours and we came back home again, and my father decided to have this gall blader removed.

we had met with almost dozen of doctors. In one hospital which was run by the armed forces of Pakistan, the ultrasound specialist doctor gave us a worry that there is something more with your gall bladder, he told us to go see some surgen, we went to see a surgen who was specialist in gall bladder removel and he was not confirmed but he told my father to have a MRI Scan, after looking at MRI scan he told us that there is some mass also in your gall bladder and may be pushing into your liver, he told him it can be some tumor, and you should have this remove immediatly.

After that we went to see the other surgen who was also speacialist in gall bladder removel and he was agreed to remove it next week after 8 days but he said there may be no tumor inside it may be your gall bladder is pushing the liver because of stones or may be it is naturaly there and he said if we find something like tumor then we can remove little part of the liver also with the gall bladder and it will be no problem for you after surgery.

The surgen told us to meet with the doctor who will give the enthesia before operation and have it all clear for surgery.

We went to see the enthesiest, he checked the heart pulse of my father and said it is missing more then 5 or 6 times a minute, so go to the cardiac and have your heart check up to get fit for the operation, we went to see the cardiac in same hospital but caridac department, the cardiac doctor told him that your heart is not fit for non heart surgery and it is highly risk for you. so the enthesiest talked with the surgen and they told us on the last day that we can not do this operation because of your heart position.

then now after couple of months in May he got this pain again and i took him to the hopital again they took those tests again and also the ultrasound and they told us that the mass got bigger slightly. the doctor came and told me there is tumor inside your father's gall bladder and surgery can not be done because of his heart, then again we came back home, scine then my father is not feeling better he said he feels tired, feel pain in the back, feel pain in lower part of the abdomen, today he got this pain again in the gall bladder and i gave him Riske 20mg capsule. He is very week now, he says he can not sit on chair nor he can sleep on the bed, because his muscle pain, most of the times in the night he takes sleeping pills.

I realy can not see him in pain, I have cryed front of my friends. I realy can not see him in pain, I don't know what is in his stomach, I am so sad for him, I pray to God please help him and give him health.

please give some advise what we can do, I will be very very thankful to you.

HELLO LEN,

i'm so very thankful that you have this article. This is really of big help to those who are diagnosed of having a gallbladder stone like me. I'm really afraid of any operation aside from the fact that it's too expensive nowadays.I;m also worried that it might cause any complication in some of my internal organs related to it in function or uses. I'm also afraid of taking any medicines for it might damage some of my body organs or may trigger some ailness.

I WILL BE TRYING THE ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT YOU ARE RECOMMENDING AND STILL GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU AFTER I TRIED AND UNDERGONE ULTRASOUND.

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!

Hi guys, I'm still young and I just had my gall bladder removed a few days ago. I'm still sore, but it's increasingly getting better I think, hopefully. They did it laproscopically. 4 small incisions, mini scars I'm sure, still bandaged so I can't tell. Any advice I can give would be, ask questions, but it's best to get it out, if you have stones or otherwise. I found out a lot of people have stones, some people I know actually, but it didn't affect them like it did me, however, ideally you should have it out or monitored if you don't feel any pain from it, because even if it's not taken out, down the road it can cause a lot more problems and then what? Also, I think it's important to note, if you're even usure about any symptoms, go get checked out. Before they found mine they told me a number of other things until I gave them more reason to look for specifics. I also don't really fit word for word with the symptom chart...My point: ask lots of questions, look things up, think of the future and do what you can. better safe than sorry.

Sir I like to inform that my wife has been suffering from pain from back to forward abdomen for last four to five years. During this period two times ultra sound test was conducted, on first occasion it was found that there was thin lining on golbladder and doctor advised some control on food items. And in the next test after almost two years or say two years ago from now doctors reported that there is nothing wrong in the report.During last one month there was some increase in pain from back to forward abdomen. Again on the advice of doctor ultrasound was conducted yesterday and it was found that there is 13mm big calculus above a septum likebig muscosal fold near the fundus only one in the gallbladder.Doctors have advised for operation. Can we avoid surgical operation? My wife is 46 years old of weight about 70 kg. there is no vomiting, no fever, but soft pain since long. there is decrease in diet or no problem of sugar or cholestral . Pathological test of blood and urine did not reflect any abnormal features. I wish to request you to let me know your valued guidance and suggestion to cure the desease. Doctor has advised to avoid milk and milk product and give some medicines , but told at the same time there is only operation solution and it should be carried out in one month. Will you please advice the right course of action. If you need I can forward Ultra sound report or other pathalogical test reports. Can it be cured by homeopathy medicine. or by mere control on food intake?I will be very much obliged to you for your kind advice in this regard. With best regards Yours faithfully danendra jain
