Do you have what it takes to embark on a game design career path? I know for many of us, playing video games means the world to us. We enjoy playing them so much that we decide to enroll ourselves in game design colleges when we grow up. However, playing the game is really different from designing the game. Any game designers can attest to that point. You might take 2 weeks to beat the Super Mario game but it will take at least 2 months to design the game. Moreover, the competition to get into game design colleges or to get a job in the game design arena is so fierce that without any prior game design experience, you will probably not get the job at all. The best way to overcome this hurdle is to do some reading on games design and probably design one or two simple video games. 

Since not many books have been written in the field of game design, finding one could be a real challenge in itself. However, as an up and coming game designer, there are several game design books that you must read. The first book is entitled "Rules of Play", written by Eric Zimmerman and Katie Salem. This book seeks to explore game elements from the scholastic perspective. The other book is "Game Design: Theory and Practice" by Richard Rouse. This book seeks to explore the area of game design from the different eras.

Now that you have some knowledge about game design, it is time to get your hands dirty by actually designing some games yourself. At this point, many of you might give up and think that you are not capable of coming up with a good game but my best advice is just do it. It is better to have something to show your prospective employer than nothing at all. Plus, it helps a lot if you are trying to get into game design colleges. The two programs that I recommend are Game Maker and Gamestar Mechanic. They will help you translate your ideas into a working prototype and you will be able to test them.
