Understanding Roleplaying for Begginers

A role-playing game (RPG; often roleplaying game) is a game where people assume the roles of fictional characters (Chars). Players decide what the actions of their characters will bee based on their character sheets. These sheets usually contain the background history, description, mannerisms of their character. The actions succeed or fail based on dice rolls. Every game has different rules and dice so it just depends on the game.

It's acting for the most part. The Game master creates a setting where each player plays his/her role of one character. Sometimes a GM will allow for regular players to also act as Non-player Characters (also known as NPC's) or if a player is absent put them as an NPC to keep the flow of the game going.

The GM describes the game world and its the people or creatures in it; the other players describe the intended actions of their characters, and the GM describes the outcomes. Some outcomes are determined by what game you are playing, the setting, the characters role, the dice, and what the characters statistics are. ie: Wisdom, Dexterity, Charisma, Constitution, Strength and so on.

I'm just describing the basics here if you are truly interested in learning to role-play. Check your local book store or shop online. There are several books out there. Also Podcast about gaming are a great help in learning the ins and outs of RPGs. Some are very informative and very entertaining. i will include links to a few of my favorites further into this hub.

There are console games that are also referred to as role playing games. These games do not involve the playing of actual roles, they take their name from the settings and the mechanics of the "tabletop or pen and paper" game

Check out local Role-playing gaming stores or just ask people you know that play. I'm sure they'd love to bring you into the fold.

Many different styles and varieties of game exist, but usually they are in the style of Dungeons and Dragons. Players usually hold the game as a small gathering. The GM purchases a preset rules and settings or he/she can set her own rules and make settings based on imagination and what is typical in an RPG game. The settings should include challenges for the player characters to overcome through play, such as traps to be avoided or foes to be fought. The GM will keep a some of the settings and plans for the game a secret and reveal it as the game goes on. Your walking along and suddenly a zombie attacks you, for example. if you knew you were going to be attacked where would the fun be in that?

As a player create your role. What character you will play. You can make it as close to your own personality as you wish or go full on opposite of who you really are. It's fiction and a game so have fun. Make a history and try to be as detailed as possible. For example your char is an elf whose family was killed and you are out for revenge. Who are you (char), where are you from (game based location), what motivates you, what was your life like before and what are you like personality wise?

Game starts:

The GM will introduce the char's and describe the settings. The player describes as much as he wants to reveal to other players while the GM knows all, usually. The players describe their actions or what they are wanting to do and depending on the game and the GM you could either have to role a die or the Gm will describe what you see and what is happening as you take action. Usually you will only need to roll a die in combat any major decisions by your char. Your char will be sent on quest, faced with challenges and level through doing this depending on how well you play your role.

The game continues until your char has met the last challenge or fought the last boss. All of which will be determined at the start of a game. Treasures abound and learning trades are fun. Train your abilities when possible. Those will also vary depending on the Race and class you choose.

Live action role-playing speaks for itself. It's like theater where you dress up and play out yoru role as if acting in a performance. SOOOO fun. Ever hear of mid-evil conventions or places that host games of the sort. Yeah, go check out onw of those if you get the chance. you'll be hooked.

And like I said grab a PlayStation game and go for it. That Will at least give you an idea of how die rolling works. It will show what damage you have done and has been done to you. Plus they are a blast.

Ok that's enough for the Beginner. Now you should be equipped with basic knowledge so go give it a whirl.

Oh and for the girls (like me) hehe go show the boys you can game every bit as well as they can. We invented drama :P

More on Gaming and podcast as I update.

What to expect: List of new games coming out, ratings if I can get accurate ones (I'd hate for you to go out and buy a game because my info was wrong and the game sucked), If I played the game and loved or hated it you will know. But better to rely on popular stats

Will eventually try to get my own podcast going but for now enjoy my favs below.

I'm new to the writing scene so if there is something you want to see on here just let me know.
