Standing tall at 197 cm, football striker Nwankwo Kanu known as 'Kanu' chose football as a profession and began to play at that level as early as age fifteen. The number of trophies won for his country and clubs, over the years is a record targeted by most Nigerian players and yet to be emulated. 

Kanu Nwankwo is the Captain of the Nigerian Super Eagles is a professional footballer. He is a striker for the Nigerian national team and for English club Portsmouth. He is the most highly-decorated African footballer in footballing history, having won a UEFA Champions League medal, a UEFA Cup medal, three F.A. Cup Winners Medals and two African Player of the Year awards, amongst others. He is the only current Premiership player to have won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, Premiership, FA Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal. He is also a UNICEF ambassador.

 

In 1996, Kanu Nwankwo after his Atlanta  Gold Medal  his soccer career nearly came to an end. He was diagnosed with a heart defect that threatened to cut short an amazing career.. God indeed has a way of saving His own.  Kanu Nwankwo successfully underwent the heart surgery in Cleveland Hospital, Ohio. USA.

 

In the 2000 Kanu Nwankwo, the twice CAF African Footballer of the Year reciprocated the public's concern shown towards him during his rehabilitation period by setting up Kanu Heart Foundation.  The Heart Foundation is indeed the most famous Charity (NGO) organisation in his homeland Nigeria with the aim of serving the entire African continent.   What more can a man give to his own people than assist in putting smiles in the faces of the helpless.  The Kanu Heart Foundation have assisted children with cardiovascular diseases by giving them free treatments abroad.

I like Kanu (very talented) and I'm glad he beat the Heart problem. Its very good of him to set up that Charity. I wonder how he was discovered in Nigeria i.e How he moved from Nigeria, to playing for a top league in Europe. Lucky guy. :)

Kanu started playing for Nigeria when Nigerian football was at its peak in the world football-it was indeed a threatening team for any world champs.In the past,many Nigerian footballers used to come to play for local clubs in my place,now also they come,but in numbers not like before.

@Lady_E - Thanks for your comments. Indeed one of the greatest things he is doing for African children is giving life to children of the less priviledged through the Kanu Heart Foundation. He knew that if not for the club he was playing for then and the prayers and personal contributions of individuals, he would have had no story to tell.

@andromida - Thanks for your comments. You are right that the Nigerian football was at a time a threat to other football teams in the world.
