General Comments

I found this film by it's intriguing title while browsing the satellite guide. I was going back and forth between titles; Gangland was starting to look pretty good. Then I saw zombies. Then I saw "Gangs of the Dead".

This film is like the best of both worlds.

"Hey, you got your gangland in my zombies!"

"No, you got your zombies in my gangland."

(together) "Two great tastes that taste great together!"

This worked for me.

Ok, so you have to come into this film expecting it to be what it is - a Grade B zombie film. The plot is basically that a meteorite hits the city and the homeless start turning into zombies. In the midst of a run-down urban area, two gangs are trying to make a deal in a warehouse and the cops have one of the leader's girlfriend wired and they too are in the warehouse. When the gangs and the cops notice the zombies, they go through the general expected conflicts with each other and eventually have to learn how to work together to save themselves from the wider mutual enemy - the zombies.

Review

So I was going to link to the best of the reviews but there were no actual competent reviews. Pretty much all of them whined about the bad make-up, and went off in major tangents about racism and sterotyping. I'm thinking these are reviewers who take themselves far too seriously. One dude was pondering Quentin Tarantino's possible ten year in the future thoughts about the importance of this film, in order to criticize it.

Dude. It's a zombie movie. Zombies movies are nothing but stereotypes, zombies are stereotypes. It's a good Grade B film. I loved it.

Basically you have your run of the mill zombie appearance, they eat the living, they follow general zombie stereotype rules such as dying only of head wounds, people wounded by the zombies turn, etc. This is all I reasonably expect from a zombie film. This film is more than adequate and some of the lines are (probably unintentionally) funny.

I give it an unpoem up.

It's me against you

and you against them

If we don't pull together

Then none of us win

The zombies outside here

are eating our friends

Don't know where they came from

But we can't let them in

So you forgive me

and I'll forgive you

And if we all pull together

Perhaps we'll get through

Just hope when we kill them

Those zombies stay gone

But I heard meteorites will

Be falling at dawn.
