Garbage Disposers Buying Guide

Garbage Disposers (Garbage disposals) are basically of two types - continuous-feed and batch-feed.
You have to turn on the continuous-feed switch as you run the water to dispose off the garbage. In batch-feed type of garbage disposers, the unit automatically turns on when you press the stopper into the drain. Both models work equally good but the batch-feed types of garbage disposers are safer because it prevents from going into the drain with the stopper in place.

You should always try to buy a garbage disposer with atleast ½ horsepower. A 1-horsepower disposer will be even better. Disposers with lesser horsepower do not perform better and they also do not last long and you will have to replace them too frequently. The low-horsepower and low-cost garbage disposers will allow waste to clog pipes increasing your work even further.

Most garbage disposers available today are power operated and have electric-powered motors, except one made by HydroMaid that doesn’t need any power and operates on the force of water from the sink spout.

Most of the garbage disposals make lot of noise. While buying a garbage disposal, keep in mind following points:

1. Buy a fatter garbage disposal. They make lesser noise.

2. Make sure that the disposal you choose fits comfortably under your sink.

3. Avoid clogging it with foods such as potato skins, melon rinds, fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, celery, coffee grounds etc. This will increase the life of the disposal.

4. Buy a garbage disposal of at least 1/2 horsepower. Disposals with lesser power can get stuck easily and they also do not last too long.
