Anchusa Azurea

A 3-5 ft. tall plant with clusters of blue flowers will fill a section of my garden early summer from this plant and will last for weeks if given proper shade and sun. Bees and butterflies adore this plant so take caution when going to cut fresh flowers from the plant to not take too much. You always want to leave enough behind for bees, butterflies and perhaps hummingbirds if they’re in your area. These flying creatures benefit your garden in ways you possibly can’t.

Yes, I said cut flowers. This plant is very popular for cut flowers. The shade of blue is stunning in a vase mixed in with other color variations. The anchusa azurea plant needs to be planted in zones 3-10. It needs to have well drained soil. To help with a drainage problem in your soil you can mix sand and potting soil into your ground dirt. The potting soil you purchase will most likely have plant food included in it so it will feed the plant. Most potting soils you purchase will feed plants up to 3 months and afterwards you can always work fertilizers in or new potting soil in order to help plant growth.

It prefers full sun, but will survive in a very little amount of shade. They don’t require a lot of watering as I stated before they like well-drained soil so the water doesn’t sit on the root system.

To encourage further fuller bloom after the first bloom you can cut the plant back to 4 inches. In the fall you need to cut back to encourage fast healthy growth in early summer. In some cases you may need to support the plant with staking it. Anchusa azurea is for you if you like the color blue, cut flowers, butterflies fluttering through your yard, and a plant that is easy to care for.
