Garden pond pumps are greatly needed to maintain the proper flow, aeration and circulation of water within the pond. The use of an efficient water garden pond pump will help to keep the water clean by preventing the formation of algae and other bacteria. Remember that the integration of pumps is an endless process, which means that it would be constantly used once you have installed it into your pond. Make sure that its operation will never be interrupted in anyway since this will cause insufficient oxygen levels in the water, which can lead to the suffocation of the fishes. Aside from that, garden pond pumps also help to eliminate accumulated debris in the water by assisting the pond filters to conveniently accumulate them.  Most pond keepers opt for submersible pumps since they are reliable, user friendly and require minimal plumbing connections.

With the advent of the World Wide Web, finding affordable and functional garden pumps are easier and more convenient. In fact, many pond owners have already taken advantage of useful information available online. Generally, you can filter your pond mechanically, biologically, chemically or through UV sterilization. Mechanical filtration is one of the most common methods used when eliminating pond impurities. However, it cannot efficiently remove algae. The biological mode of filtration uses an unusual but effective approach. It lets the algae grow on the surface area while the bacteria present on the biological filter breaks it down and turn it into a less harmful substance. Another filtration method is the use of chemicals. It hinders unwanted algae formation but most keepers try to stay away from the chemical-approach of filtration due to environmental concerns. UV clarifiers are effective filtering systems which eradicates algae as well as harmful pathogens.

Now, that you are already familiar with the types of filtration system available. You also need to know the different types of pumps. The filtration system on your pond is powered by the pumps. Both the filter and pump work together in order to keep a healthy environment for your fishes. Each type of pump is designed to carry unique features and to address a particular purpose. Here are some of the most common types of garden pond pumps that you can choose from:

  • Statuary pumps – This type of pump is perfect for creating pond ornaments or small indoor fountain. They have low head pressure and GPH. They are commonly applied for indoor display or patio fountains but they can't be used for filters.
  • Magnetic drive pumps – This is the most common type of pump, which uses electromagnetism to rotate impeller in order to force the water out. It is an efficient pumping system that can help you incur greater energy savings.
  • Direct drive pumps – If you are looking for excellent head heights, then direct drive pumps are the most ideal option. They use electric motors which turn the impeller along with the drive shaft. It is the less expensive type of pump that requires lots of energy. Since it utilizes electric motors, you need to regularly lubricate it with oil for optimum performance.
  • Submersible pumps – This is the preferred choice among pond owners, and is commonly used in backyard ponds, which constantly operates 24/7.
  • External pumps – These are perfect for outdoor fountains since they produce high head pressure and flow rates. Aside from that, they also require very minimal maintenance. However, installation is quite difficult and they can be a bit noisy.
  • Solid handling pumps – These are types of submersible garden pond pumps designed for large ponds that need to eliminate large loads of debris. They help to prevent damage to the pump's impeller while ensuring the proper circulation of water despite its difficult condition.
  • Fountain pumps – This type of pumps are highly recommended for small water fountains or waterfalls. Fountain pumps are typically sold in kits which already include a pre-filter, water pump and a fountain.

Familiarizing the different garden pond pumps will aid you in selecting the right type of pump for your water garden. Considering the pros and cons of each type will help you pick the ideal garden pump that will best address your needs!
