Garden Storage Cabinets - info

In years past, the most common form of garden storage was the traditional wooden shed.  Available in a set amount of shapes and sizes, they are often not practical in many houses with smaller gardens.  As this is proving to be the case more regularly, there are now a large amount of garden storage cabinets available.

Cabinet Materials

The more modern garden storage cabinets and units are usually manufactured from either word or metal. Similar to garden sheds, wooden cabinets need to be treated prior to any major weather changes and need to be maintained by regular treatment of the wood throughout the year.

Although wooden cabinets are cheaper, more people opt for the metal cabinets as they are much easier to maintain. They very rarely become damaged from the weather, most notably heavy or regular rain downpours and once built, require little in the way of care and attention.

Cabinet Sizes

Available in many different sizes, the most common type is the tall, wardrobe like storage cabinet.  Opening with two double doors at the front, the cabinets generally have a shelf at the top above eye level and a shelf on the bottom, at approximately ankle or shin height.  Hooks and clips are then aligned along the back panel for storing gardening tools and accessories and four cupboards with a set of drawers line the centre of the cabinet.  Suitable for all types of storage, they are very much self-contained units.

One of the points many people do not take into consideration when purchasing a garden cabinet is the roof.  If the cabinet is to be placed against a wall, the roof should be slanted and if possible, towards the side of the cabinet.  This ensures that if it is raining, the water does not gather at the back of the cabinet between the wall (with a rear slanted roof) and drains off to the side – making it possible for someone to still enter the cabinet when raining (as opposed to when a forward slanted roof is prominent).

Garden Cabinets - Conclusion

Garden cabinets created from a durable plastic are a popular option, primarily due to them being a great material to leave outside in all weathers; however their major negative point is that they are very easy to break into – a factor where metal cabinets excel.  If a plastic cabinet is chosen, the owner should consider fitting an alarm.  Garden unit alarms can be purchased for relatively cheap prices (when in comparison to the value of what is being stored in the cabinet) and will generally deter any would-be thief.
