How To Attract Wildlife Using Garden Water Features
One of the biggest benefits that come with having a water feature in your garden is being able to attract wildlife. There is something very special about sitting outside and being one with nature as birds and other animals visit.
While most water features will attract at least some wildlife, your best bet to attract the most is having a pond. Animals like birds, reptiles, amphibians, and more will enjoy living and interacting with each other in your yard.
The reason a pond works so well is because it has the ability to facilitate the creation of an ecosystem. Plant life and animal life will thrive because after you put the proper things in place nature will take over.
Certain kinds of animals will love the water feature you’ve provided because it becomes a source for them to drink. Songbirds, pigeons, and doves will frequent your yard. Other animals will make appearances to quench their thirst as well.
Animals will also use your pond as a place to bathe and swim. If you’ve had a birdbath before you know how much they like to splash in there. A pond is even better because birds and other creatures will be able to make use of it.
It is a good idea to have some kind of moving water in your pond as well. Since you’re probably going to have a limited area to work with, the natural current that ponds usually have probably won’t be there. Water that is totally stagnant can quickly become unhealthy so you should consider including a fountain or a waterfall in the pond as well.
In addition to providing the water you should also provide the vegetation that wildlife is attracted to. Some of these plant should go in or very near the water while others can go anywhere in your yard to attract certain animals. If you’re trying to attract a specific kind of animal you can research what they like best and be sure to provide it to them.
One thing that some people are confused about is whether or not they need to buy expensive equipment and filters to attract wildlife. The answer is no! There are certain kinds of ponds that you need those things for. An example is if you’re going to keep koi fish. As long as you have filtering aquatic plants and keep the water moving somehow you should be able to mimic nature without a lot of fuss.
The needs of wildlife are simple. They need food, water, and shelter. If you take the time to make sure your water feature has all of those things you’ll be able to attract wildlife to your garden.
