Garmish-Partenkirchen in the Bavarian Alps in Germany is a very famous place for wintersport as well as for summersport.

It was first named in Roman time under the name of Partanum and was on the trade route from Venice to Augsburg.

Today, two separate villages which by now grown together.but were forced together in the 1936 Winter Olympic by Hitler. However, you can still see the difference. While Garmish is somewhat more elegant and has a town characteristic; Partenkirchen still has cobblestone roads and houses decorate with fresco which will give you a glimpse of the past. Another fascinating and intriguing tradition you will find there, is the early morning and late afternoon herding of the dairy cows up or down their mountain meadows. When that happens, all traffic has to stop.

Garmish-Partenkirchen became famous for its ski jumping contests. Every New Year they have a ski jumping event to bring in the New Year.

Closed to the towns is Germany's highest mountain called Zugspitze 2963 m with the famous Zugspitzbahn which reaches about 2600 m. The region is in the Wettersteingebirge and you will find an enormous choice of various ski-runs and ski lifts. There are ski runs for beginners, medium and pro-fies.

Since it lies 720-800 m above see llevel it is know for the wellness climate. It is a famous spa place which offers you saunas, various massage and swimming in the sport hall in winter and as well as in the summer. An Olympic styled Ice skating ring.

Snowboarding, downhill skiing, cross country sking, sledging and horse drawn sledges will all stop you from being bored.

There are also lot of excursion to most of the King Ludwig's palaces and castles. As well as to Berchtesgaden which is another famous place to see.

It's interesting that although these two seperate villages were forced together, they still found a way to maintain there indivduality.
